ADAC GT Masters eSports VIP Race whets appetite ahead of coming season

The mixture of real racing drivers and sim racers from the RaceRoom community ensured there was plenty of action at the Hockenheimring in the ADAC GT Masters eSports VIP Race. Fans were treated to spectacular battles throughout the field. The competitors were visibly enjoying the opportunity to race without being under pressure. ADAC GT Masters driver Tim Heinemann (timheinemann.com) won the sprint race, while Yannick Mund (Eibach SimRacing) took victory in the main race.

Sprint race: Heinemann sets the tone

It was all-out attack from the word go in the opening 15-minute race. Martin Petermann (Zeroforce Racing) reacted fastest at the start and raced into the lead from third on the grid. However, the opposition soon swallowed him up: Petermann was first overtaken by Heinemann, and soon found himself in fourth place after being passed by Mund and Danny Giusa (privateer).

Heinemann spent the remainder of the race out in front. Mund did attempt to attack the leader at times, but ultimately had to back off and settle for second place. Third place went to Giusa.

However, the real racing drivers also caught the eye and finished in the top ten. Former ADAC GT Masters driver Will Tregurtha (Mivano Racing) came home sixth. eSport is by no means new territory for the Brit. He uses a simulator to prepare for real races and also competes in a number of digital racing series. Tregurtha was followed over the line in seventh place by Luca Trefz, who started in the ADAC GT Masters in 2021.

Main race: Mund refuses to give up

For much of the 30-minute main race, it looked like being another victory for Heinemann. He passed pole-sitter Mund at the start and soon opened a gap of over two seconds. However, Mund refused to give up and managed to close that gap. With seven minutes remaining, he made the decisive move, overtaking Heinemann in the hairpin to take the lead, which he held onto through to the finish.

Third place was also fiercely contested: At the start of the race, Petermann lay just ahead of Giusa in the final podium position. When Giusa attempted an overtaking manoeuvre in the hairpin, there was contact and the two fell back. The beneficiary was ADAC GT4 Germany driver Ben Dörr, who suddenly found himself third. However, it did not take Petermann long to retake third place, and he went on to finish in that position. Giusa also climbed back into fourth place. “I have to admit that the race was much better after the spin,” chuckled Giusa after the race. “It was great fun scrapping with the others. Will [Tregurtha], in particular, gave me a real headache.”

Dörr ended the race as the best real racing driver in fifth place, ahead of Tregurtha and Formula 2 driver David Beckmann (privateer). “In the opening race, I first had to get used to sim racing. However, the main race was great fun,” said Beckmann. “It went much better for me. I had a great battle with “Luci” Trefz. In the end, however, tyre wear caused me a few problems.”

This season’s ADAC GT Masters eSport Championship powered by EnBWmobility+ starts this Tuesday (15.02.2022) at the Brands Hatch circuit in Great Britain.
