ADAC Formel 4·26.4.2015

Comments on Sunday: I'm obviously feeling ecstatic!

Mick Schumacher (16, GER, Van Amersfoort Racing), winner: "I'm obviously feeling ecstatic! My first race weekend could not have gone better! We had a good start, because my tyres were still fresh, and it went well from then on, apart from at the end where things were close again. I was not too unhappy about the safety car. All in all, I'm really pleased with this start to the season and look forward to the next set of races."

Joey Mawson (19, AUS, Van Amersfoort Racing), second: "I'm very satisfied. A podium on my first weekend in the ADAC Formula 4 is perfect. I got off to a really good start, and overtaking during the race was great fun. At the end of the race, I was getting closer and closer to my team-mate Mick. But the appearance of the safety car finally put paid to my chances. But I'm very happy with second place and the one-two win for my team. The weekend could not have ended on a better note."

Thomas Preining (16, AUT, kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport), third: "A podium on the first race weekend of the ADAC Formula 4 season is really a perfect start to my formula racing career. I hardly had any opportunity to do any testing over the winter break and have no prior experience of driving on the track at Oschersleben. Consequently, just finishing in the points was our objective. But I've now managed this twice, and it doesn't get any better than capping it all off with a podium. Having said that, though, my start was not optimal. Difficulties with the clutch meant that I immediately lost a few positions. In addition, I had some minor problems with the car on the first few laps. After that, I was able to reclaim third place, but by then the two front-runners were too far away. The safety car gave me hope again briefly, but unfortunately, the race ended behind it and an attack was no longer possible."

Marvin Dienst (18, Lampertheim, HTP Junior Team): "The final race was really interesting. I knew from the beginning that it wouldn't be easy from tenth on the grid, especially in this competitive field. But I got off to a good start and was able to win two positions. Overtaking is obviously difficult on this track; also my tyres were no longer optimal. In a scrap with another driver, I unfortunately damaged my front wing slightly. Luckily, the safety car helped me. I was able to finish sixth and score some important points for the championship."

Tim Zimmermann (18, Langenargen, Neuhauser Racing): "I am only partially satisfied with my weekend. In the final race, I was in second place for a long time. But the leader had fresh tyres, so I was unable to keep up. For this reason, I eventually had to surrender second place. At that point, I was focusing on third place and a podium. Unfortunately, a move to overtake an opponent led to an incident in which my tyre got damaged. I then had to retire from the race."

Marek Böckmann (18, Lautersheim, Jenzer Motorsport): "The start of the second race was optimal. I was immediately able to move up from P23 to P16. Unfortunately, I then made a slight mistake and had to return briefly to the pits. Then, as I tried to work my way back up the field, I ran out of time. Things didn't work out for the best in the final race either. I was already in the Top Ten, but then got hit with a drive-through penalty after being involved in a minor collision. In this race especially, points were within reach, but I'll just have to put this one down to experience and focus on the Red Bull Ring."

Luca Engstler (15, Wildpoldsried, Engstler Motorsport): "The second race actually started quite well, but unfortunately I made a small braking error which let four of my opponents go past. I fought my way back to the front and was happy with my result. In the final race, however, things didn't go much better. I once again got off to a super start and gained several positions. Unfortunately, I had a bump on Turn 1, and the race was over for me. Nevertheless, I can look back positively on the weekend. We had set ourselves certain targets for the debut and we achieved them."

Jan Jonck (16, DNK, RS Competition): "We made a lot of changes to the setup before the second race. Unfortunately, they didn't pay off. Although I got off to a good start, I then dropped back for want of speed. In the third race, I was involved in a lot of jostling for position. This race was definitely a significant improvement on the beginning of the weekend. We can build on that."

Leon Wippersteg (18, Kirchlengern, Team Timo Scheider): "I have learnt a lot on my debut weekend, especially where wheel-to-wheel action is concerned. The standing starts were also new to me. You always have to be aware of what's going on ahead and behind - the rear view mirror suddenly becomes very important. Especially with regard to the setup, the team and I have made great progress. We can take a lot of positives from Oschersleben in all departments. I am very happy with my results."
