Comments on Sunday: Scorcher of a race at the Sachsenring

Joey Mawson (19, AUS, Van Amersfoort Racing), Winner: "This victory is fantastic - probably the best in my career so far. Marvin was incredibly fast this weekend, but my team gave me a really good car for the third race. A big thank you to the engineers and the whole team. My start was good, but in the restart after the safety car, I went slightly backwards. While I was battling my way forward again, I had some great fights and performed some super overtaking manoeuvres, so I'm really happy about that."

Marvin Dienst (18, DEU, HTP Junior Team), Second: "Two wins and now second place in the last race; that makes it an almost perfect weekend. On the previous race weekend at the Nürburgring, I notched up two wins and a third place. Now I've managed a second place, so the target for Oschersleben is clear. I was aiming for a hat-trick of wins this time, but the safety car periods were simply too long for me to get all the way to the front. I exerted a lot of pressure on the last lap to catch Joey, but I ran out of time for a proper attack. Once again, the straight-line speed was great, and I've also scored vital points in my battle with Joel. The weekend could hardly have gone any better."

Kim Luis Schramm (18, DEU, Neuhauser Racing), Third: "I'm very satisfied with this podium finish. It's twice as nice when you're competing in your home race. I held the lead for a long time, I got the timing right for the restarts after the safety car periods, and I kept the gap constant. Towards the end of the race, though, I was having some slight problems with the balance of the car, which cost me some time. I could see the other two closing up on me from behind, but I was surprised at how much faster they were. Even so, P3 is an absolutely satisfactory result."

Mike Ortmann (15, DEU, kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport), best-placed rookie: "I'm delighted with this victory in the rookie classification. However, I have mixed emotions, because a Top Three finish in this race was a distinct possibility. I was in second place for a long time, but after the final restart, I made a small mistake on the first corner. I had not expected Joey to pull past on the inside. Nevertheless, I've scored important points towards the rookie championship and reduced my deficit on David Beckmann. I would like to carry on in this vein at Oschersleben."

Joel Eriksson (17, SWE, Motopark), sixth : "The start was OK, and the first lap was good until the safety car came out. But after that, we had understeer again. I tried anyway to get the best out of the situation. I lost two positions to Mawson and Dienst. The weekend wasn't really good for us, even though it started well with P1 in my qualifying group. Two second places weren't bad, but meanwhile unfortunately my championship rival Marvin was winning."

Tim Zimmermann (18, DEU, Neuhauser Racing), eighth: "I started from eighth place and wanted to get past an opponent. I had understeer which resulted in a collision. I lost my front spoiler and had to come into the pits to change it. When the safety car came out, I was able to close the gap on the main field but was still running last. With my car and setup being so good, I was able to work my way forward bit by bit, and on one lap, I overtook several drivers. Everything went well. From being in last place to still finish in the points makes me very happy."

Janneau Esmeijer (18, NL, HTP Junior Team), ninth :"I started from 24th on the grid. If you're starting in the midfield, you have to be very careful. But I gave my best and overtook cautiously. Fortunately, everything went well. I'm very pleased to have at least scored a few points. I got past 15 cars on a day when there were once again three safety car periods. I'm really very happy with the final race. Marvin's performance shows that, with better qualifying, more would have been possible this weekend."

Robert Shwartzman (15, RUS, kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport), tenth: "That was a lot of fun. I went into the race from 27th on the grid. At the start, I lost a few positions. I was on the outside for the first corner. My only possibility for overtaking was to brake early, which I did. After the first corner, I had already got past four or five opponents. It then carried on like that, and towards the end, I was able to benefit from a few mistakes made by my opponents. It was a really good race. It's difficult to overtake on this track, so I'm all the more satisfied to have finished in the points."

David Kolkmann (18, DEU, Jenzer Motorsport), 13th: "The start was not ideal, because I lost three positions after the first lap. From then on, things went well and I was able to finish in 13th place. The car was actually pretty good, so I'm satisfied. As regards the races, the weekend went very well except for the starts which we need to practise a bit. We need to qualify further forward in order to have a better starting position. But in the races, I noticed a distinct improvement compared to earlier in the season."

Carrie Carpenter (16, DEU, HTP Junior Team), 17th: "I had a pretty good start from P19. I gained some places early on and was already up to 15th after a few laps. Looking at the lap times, I could perhaps have achieved more, but I had to defend against the cars behind. That cost me two places. P17 is my best result so far, and it's clear that there is even greater potential. I'm also optimistic about the upcoming races."

Toni Wolf (16, DEU, Toni Wolf), 19th: "The last race wasn't all that pleasant for me. The start was actually quite good, and I got away OK. At one point in the race, I was up to 15th, but I then got held up. An overtaking manoeuvre didn't come off, and I lost a few positions. In the end, I finished 18th. Everything depended on qualifying which didn't go so well. We must try to improve that aspect in the future."

Giorgio Maggi (17, CH, Race Performance), 20th : "I got off the line pretty well at the start and moved up from 28th to 18th. I was involved in a lot of scraps and there were a few contacts as a result. We got close to the ideal setup over the weekend, because the lap times don't look at all bad. In qualifying, we took a bit of a gamble and it went wrong. That can happen."

Benjamin Mazatis (17, DEU, kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport), 25th: "The engine died on me at the start, and of course, that meant I was last. After the safety car period, I made good progress forward. Towards the end, unfortunately, there was a minor contact with an opponent, in which I damaged a tyre. Fortunately, I was able to finish the race without an additional tyre change."
