One team, three drivers, three races and 67 gains in position - that's how the weekend of SMG Swiss Motorsport Group at the Red Bull Ring can best be summed up in numbers. Mattia Drudi, Giorgio Maggi and Nikolaj Rogivue produced an incomparable display of overtaking at the second ADAC Formula 4 race weekend in Austria. Only technical difficulties in qualifying prevented an even better points haul in Spielberg.
The highlights of the weekend
Podium within reach: Mattia Drudi just narrowly missed another podium finish this season. The Italian crossed the finish line in fourth place in the second race at the Red Bull Ring, having started from tenth position on the grid. He achieved a podium at his first attempt at the season opener in Oschersleben. Picking up an eighth place in the first race in Spielberg, Drudi secured more important points towards the championship. He is ranked sixth overall in the standings from around 40 participants. Mattia: "My car was really strong in the race. If things had gone a little better in qualifying, then I could easily have battled for more podium finishes."
Amazing results for overtaking: The race performance of the SMG Swiss Motorsport Group youngsters was impressive. Nikolaj Rogivue improved by a total of 29 positions in the three races. Team-mate Giorgio Maggi moved up 28 places. Along with Mattia Drudi, the three young talents gained an amazing 67 positions, but the points score did not look so good. Maggi and Rogivue had to start from the back of the grid after technical problems in qualifying. Giorgio: "It's incredibly difficult to come from behind and finish in the points in a field of nearly 40 cars, which was a great pity, because our team had the necessary speed for much better results."
Record-breaking charge: Nikolaj Rogivue was unstoppable in the second race on Sunday afternoon. The Swiss driver improved from 33rd position on the grid to finish 20th. Never before has a driver in the ADAC Formula 4 managed to gain 13 places in a race. Rogivue was not put off by the two safety car phases either and continued his successful charge to the very end. Nikolaj: "I can be very satisfied with my performance in the race and intend to turn this positive upward trend into points next race weekend."
Huge interest: Spectators were able to follow the spectacular charges up the field made by the three SMG Swiss Motorsport Group drivers live on TV. Sports channel Sport1 broadcast all of the weekend's three races on free-to-air TV to millions of households. Giorgio Maggi: "That was mega! Still, I would have preferred to have secured lots of points instead. My car was often seen on television, because I was involved in so many battles in a tightly bunched midfield." 10,000 fans at the track provided further evidence of the enormous interest that exists in the new ADAC Formula 4.
What next? ADAC Formula 4 racing continues for the three SMG Swiss Motorsport Group young talents in less than two weeks' time.
