Joël Eriksson proved the dominant force at the Red Bull Ring. The young Swede won two out of three races in Styria. Only a crash in the final heat prevented him from a possible maximum. "After a good start, I had already made a few spots by the second turn, and I thought nobody was straight behind me," he said. "So I tried to position my car perfectly and line up the guys in front – when I suddenly got punted off from behind."
Eriksson leaves Austria as the new overall championship leader just the same. "I shall now try to extend that lead during the forthcoming meeting."
In spectacular fashion, team-mate Jonathan Cecotto took the lead in der Rookie´s cup. The South American charged through the field in each of the three heats. He improved from 19th to 12th in race one, climbed from 17th to ninth in the second heat and from 12th to fifth in the final. "I managed some good races with a lot of overtaking, and I am still continuing to learn."
German Michael Waldherr proved he belongs to this year´s cream of Formula Four, too. The 18-year-old finished fourth in the opening race after fighting himself past and fending off three opponents. In heat two, Waldherr held third spot until after a safety car period, when he dropped to fifth. And in the final, he clocked the fastest overall lap time. His way up the order from seventh saw him end up fourth. "I got hold up behind the safety car for too long, otherwise a better result might have been possible."
Jannes Fittje experienced a tough weekend. "We wer unlucky in qualifying, and due to the many safety cars, I didn´t really stand a chance to fight back and up the order in the races," he sighs. "My car was very fast, and had the races been longer, things would have looked vastly different." But given the hectic races, Fittje retired from heat one after two shunts; in the second race, he improved from 24th to 12th, and in the closing heat, he charged from P30 to P18.
Team principal Timo Rumpfkeil said: "That was a weekend to write home about. We managed to claim first spot in both drivers´ championships. Team and drivers simply did a phenomenal job."
