Mike David Ortmann: 'I'm mega proud': ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg selects the Formula 4 third-placed driver as Sports Personality of the Year

All good things come in sixes: The honours keep coming for Mike David Ortmann (17, Germany, ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V.). The latest in his as yet short but successful motor racing career were conferred on him last Sunday . Ortmann has just completed his second season in the ADAC Formula 4 series, taking a highly creditable third place in the championship. At the 31st annual awards ceremony staged by the ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg in Berlin-Neukölln, he picked up no fewer than four trophies. In late November, Ortmann had already received the excellent news that the ADAC Sports Foundation had extended their sponsorship and that he had taken third place in his year group at the Deutsche Post Speed Academy.

Among the trophies picked up in Berlin were Sportler des Jahres 2016 (Sports Personality of the Year). The presentation was made by Peter Mücke, who himself won the ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg 2016 Best Team award for his Mücke Motorsport outfit. Ortmann was also delighted to win the Rundstrecken-Meisterschaft (Circuit Championship) as well as the Young Driver Trophy for the second year running. In addition, the 17-year-old received a Distinction for "outstanding performance in motorsports during the 2016 season" on the basis of his third-place finish in this year’s ADAC Formula 4 championship.

Ortmann has every reason to feel satisfied with the way the 2016 season went: "I am obviously highly honoured by this award and thank the panel of judges for the confidence they have shown in me. I really appreciate it. It was an unbelievable season: finishing third in the ADAC Formula 4 championship, then having my membership of the ADAC Sport Foundation squad renewed, next coming third in the Deutsche Post Speed Academy and now winning four awards - including the 2016 ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg Sports Personality of the Year. It’s going to take a few weeks for all of this to sink in."

Having won three ADAC Formula 4 races and finished in the Top Three on seven other occasions in 2016, Ortmann is obviously having to field quite a few questions about his next career move, but he is not giving anything away: "I can only say one thing at the moment. You’ll be seeing me on the racetrack again in 2017."
