The final weekend of the season was a bit too tight for the liking of the new rookie champion. "It wasn´t part of the plan that the final run-in should be such an exciting one," said Nicklas Nielsen (19, Denmark, Neuhauser Racing) with a broad grin after clinching the ADAC Formula 4 Best Rookie title in the last race of the campaign. His winning margin over Yuri Vips (16, Estonia, Prema Powerteam) was only twelve points, but the Dane had no complaints: "I am thrilled, also for my crew who have worked so hard all season."
Winner Nielsen (317 points) and runner-up Vips (305) were followed by Juan Manuel Correa (17, USA / Ecuador, Prema Powerteam) on 261½ points. Nielsen´s team-mate Felipe Drugovich (16, Brazil) finished in fourth place on 259 points. "We are very proud of these lads and their performance," said team boss Hannes Neuhauser. "If anyone had offered me this outcome at the start of the season, I would have snatched their hand off."
Nielsen scored points on a consistent basis. The teenager from Hørning near Aarhus came away with a massive points haul from the opening weekend at Oschersleben and the subsequent trip to the Sachsenring in particular. He was the Best Rookie in six of the 24 races and finished eighth overall in his debut season.
Nielsen entered formula car racing at the relatively late age of 19. After many successful years in international karting series, he has only this year graduated to ADAC Formula 4. At the same time, he has been contesting the Audi TT Cup, a competition in which he is currently placed fourth ahead of the season finale at Hockenheim on the weekend of 14th 16th October.
