16-year-old Jonny Edgar from the UK was on impressive form again as he won the second ADAC Formula 4 season race at the Lausitzring. Van Amersfoort Racing's driver emerged triumphant after an exciting scrap with team-mate Jak Crawford and will start the third race at 3.30 pm with the maximum points haul of 50 points. In accordance with the regs, Edgar will occupy grid slot 8 for that race. 15-year-old Tim Tramnitz from US Racing was also overjoyed with his success. The ADAC Sports Foundation protégé achieved his maiden podium for third place and was again best Rookie as in the first race on Saturday.
"Starting the season with two wins feels incredible," said Edgar. I feel very comfortable in my new team and am already looking forward to the third race." Unlike in the first round, pole-sitter Crawford got off to a good start and defended the top spot against Edgar. Oliver Bearman, who started the race from third place, could hardly get off the line and lost several places. The two Red Bull Juniors Crawford and Edgar demonstrated their strength over the course of the race and continued to draw away from the rest of the field.
Out in front, though, a really exciting battle between the two of them began to enfold. They were practically side-by-side as Edgar repeatedly tried to find a way past at the end of the main straight. But Crawford defended himself very well and maintained the lead initially. With five minutes to go before the end of the race, Edgar managed to pull off a terrific move which was the decisive manoeuvre of the race, leading to his win. "I tried several times but wasn't close enough," said Edgar "I was able to pull away, however, once I had made my move stick."
To their rear, Tramnitz was able to build on his fine performance from the first round with an outstanding overtaking manoeuvre on Frenchman Victor Bernier in the closing stages of the race, enabling him to claim his maiden podium. In the Rookie competition, it's already looking like the title will be his for the taking. Behind Bernier from R-ace GP, his team-mate, Kirill Smal, from Russia took P5 from fellow Russian, US Racing's Vlad Lomko.
