ADAC Formel 4·30.10.2020

FP2: Bernier again in a league of his own: French youngster one second faster than championship leader Edgar

Another free practice, and another best time by a wide margin: France’s Victor Bernier was once again in a league of his own in the wet conditions at the DEKRA Lausitzring. In the second ADAC Formula 4 free practice session on the track in Brandenburg, the 16-year-old clocked a time of 2:07.345 minutes, which put him more than one second faster than championship leader Jonny Edgar. Oliver Bearman took third place just behind Edgar. Bernier therefore goes into the two qualifying sessions in the afternoon (start time 15:15 CET) as the clear favourite for pole.

By contrast with FP1, the field was much more tightly bunched and the gaps were smaller. The only contestant who really stood out was again Bernier. The R-ace GP youngster took the lead early on and proved to be uncatchable by the opposition. England’s Jonny Edgar showed a clear improvement compared to the first session, laying down a clear marker of intent. In the season opener at the Lausitzring at the beginning of August (albeit contested on the sprint configuration of the track), the 16-year-old Red Bull Junior won two of the three races.

Behind third-placed Bearman was Berlin teenager Joshua Dürksen, ahead of ADAC Sports Foundation protégé Tim Tramnitz from Hamburg in P5. Jak Crawford (USA), who is 28 points behind Edgar in the championship, finished the session in sixth place. This penultimate race weekend of the 2020 ADAC High-Speed Academy may see at least one title decided. As usual, there are three races on the programme. The first will take place at midday on Saturday (12:00 CET), and the other two on Sunday (09:00 CET and 12:30 CET).
