Callaway Competition team leader Ernst Wöhr currently has lots of reasons to be pleased: After two wins this season, his drivers Diego Alessi and Daniel Keilwitz lead the drivers' standings of the ADAC GT Masters in their Corvette Z06.R and Callaway Competition is at the top of the team standings. Callaway could become 'half-time champions' in the League of Super Sports Cars at the next race around the Nürburgring during the ADAC Truck Grand Prix weekend.
The Corvette was not among the favourites to win at the Sachsenring. Did you expect such a good result?
"After achieving pole position, I was initially just a little bit surprised by the win. Our speed was good, but we were not really fast. What puzzled us was that the opposition did not do more. But actually, the Corvette has always run well at the Sachsenring. Two years ago, Thomas Jäger led comfortably for much of the first half of the race and finished on the podium for the first time in the ADAC GT Masters with Sven Hannawald. We were on track to win both races the year before too. We were fortunate this year that qualifying ran like clockwork for Daniel, and Diego was on pole for Race 1. Diego was able to draw away in the first race and stay out of trouble."
Championship leaders Diego Alessi and Daniel Keilwitz are co-driving for your team for the second year in succession. How do you explain the pair's success so far this season?
"Good and bad luck aside; both drivers have approached the start with a different attitude this season. We analysed the 2011 season and found that to clinch the title by the final race, you only needed to keep finishing in fourth or fifth place. You don't even have to finish on the podium regularly. That gave the two drivers food for thought and they are lining up on the grid with a different attitude this year. Of course, it's all the better if pole positions and victories come your way as in Zandvoort and at the Sachsenring."
However, Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Andreas Wirth driving the second Corvette were very unlucky in the first races.
"Heinz-Harald and Andreas Wirth also produced a strong performance in all three events so far. Unfortunately, the two were hit by the many teething problems that we had through the technical improvements on our Corvette this year. They were quick in the race at the Sachsenring, though, Andreas Wirth moved up from P18 to P6 in just twelve laps. We've gone through the entire car with a fine toothed comb ahead of the race at the Nürburgring."
You mentioned Sven Hannawald a moment ago. He's decided to undertake some training this year. Will he still be driving a Corvette?
"Yes, indeed. He's not only fast but also successful. We were at Hockenheim racing with him just a few days ago and he finished second. Sven turned in a tremendously strong performance and was faster at Hockenheim than ever before. His training year is certainly having a good effect."
What are your expectations for the next race at the Nürburgring? Do you think you will be successful in clinching the 'half-time championship'?
"The Nürburgring always really suited the Corvette, whether along the sprint track or on the Grand Prix circuit. Our Corvette has good all-round qualities. Well, we might not have the most downforce or the best aerodynamics, but the engine is terrific and what's most important, the car is very driveable. Our first priority is to secure some decent points again at the Nürburgring. Of course, there's nothing to be gained from being champions at the half-way stage, but we would be really pleased if can pull it off."
