Toni Seiler (Callaway Competition) ended a long lean spell, winning the amateur classification in Race 2 at the Red Bull Ring. This was the first time the two-time former champion from Switzerland, now driving a Corvette Z06.R GT3, has taken the top podium spot since the grand finale of the 2010 season at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben.
For the first half of the race, however, it had looked as if Porsche man Swen Dolenc (FACH AUTO TECH) was destined to continue his onward march to the title. Dolenc's co-driver Martin Ragginger had moved up to third place overall, but a double penalty for a misdemeanour on Lap 1 and for cutting short the mandatory pit stop were to deprive the 44-year-old of the win in his classification. This allowed Toni Seiler to lead the way in the second stint ahead of Jan Stovicek (HEICO Gravity Charouz) in a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3. The Czech driver then came under pressure from Dolenc who, after serving the second penalty, fought his way back to the front, and from Rene Bourdeaux (GT3 team Hull) in another Porsche 911 GT3 R. Both Porsches overtook the Mercedes to finish the race behind the winner Seiler in positions two and three.
"We didn't exactly have the easiest of weekends, with problems in practice and qualifying, and unfortunately, we were unable to complete the first race," said Toni Seiler after his first win of the season. "The whole Callaway team and especially our Czech pit crew did a fantastic job this weekend. This success is due primarily to all their hard work."
Swen Dolenc was not dissatisfied with second place: "Unfortunately, we were a little too quick during the pit stop and were penalised for that. But then I immediately found my rhythm and moved up the field by several places. So in the end, we made the best of a bad situation. Martin drove a great race and our 911 was consistently good right through to the end."
For René Bourdeaux, second place came as something of a consolation after having to retire from Saturday's race when in a promising position: "After our DNF in Race 1, we had only minor bad luck today. We received a drive-through penalty which Alfred served immediately; that enabled me to immediately find my rhythm. Unfortunately, I stalled the engine during the pit stop which cost us a few seconds, but after that, my race was good. I had a lot of fun and a really nice time."
Fourth-placed Stovicek missed the amateur podium by a narrow margin, but can nonetheless feel pleased after securing his best result of the season in the amateurs. Fifth place went to local favourite Peter Ebner (Team rhino's Leipert) in the Lamborghini Gallardo LP600+ ahead of the Porsche mixed doubles team of Andrina Gugger and Otto Klohs (FACH AUTO TECH). Kristian Poulsen (Young Driver AMR) still occupies second place in the amateur standings, despite failing to complete the race after his Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3 developed engine problems.
