Having the same strategy as the overall winner was the recipe to success in the Amateur class during the season opener. Kristian Poulsen, a new addition to the Young Driver AMR team, started the race on slicks and made the right decision. The Dane, who was the fastest amateur driver in Qualifying, showed a good head for tyre choice and comfortably led the first half of the race in the Amateur class. After an early pitstop, team mate Christoffer Nygaard took control of the wheel and put in a flawless drive to safely bring home the Amateur class victory for his compatriot.
"The start of the race wasn't very easy on slicks, but things improved after a few laps", said Poulsen after the race. "We had a problem with the air pressures and therefore decided to take an early pitstop."
There was a lot of drama in the last three laps in second place. The Team GT3-Kasko Porsche 911 GT3-R of Amateur class driver René Bordeaux, who took over from Alfred Renauer in the second half of the race, retired from second place in the Amateur standings just three laps before the end of the race with technical problems. Carsten Tilke (Prosperia uhc speed-Audi R8 LMS ultra), son of race track architech Hermann Tilke, was able to benefit from this. The Audi driver started on slicks in the rain and was pleased with his second place finish in the Amateur class.
The podium was completed by last year's Amateur championship runner-up Swen Dolenc in the FACH AUTO TECH Porsche 911 GT3-R. The two time Amateur champion Toni Seiler just missed out on the podium, finishing fourth in his Callaway Competition Corvette Z06-R GT3. The reigning Amateur champion Marc A. Hayek ended the race in fifth place in the Lamborghini Gallardo LP600+ ahead of ADAC GT Masters returnee Achim Winter in the new Chevrolet Camaro GT for YACO Racing powered by Jochen Schweizer.
