ADAC GT Masters·7.10.2012

Hockenheim notebook: News snippets from the grand finale

Nice touch: With the message 'Thanks guys' displayed on the sideblades of their Audi R8 LMS ultra, Christopher Mies and Edward Sandström paid tribute to their mechanics for all their hard work during the 2012 season.

After winning Saturday's race in the Endurance Championship at the Nürburgring, Mercedes AMG customer sports adviser and record DTM champion Bernd Schneider hurried across to Hockenheim to watch the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 that he had co-developed take the ADAC GT Masters title on Sunday.

Mercedes AMG celebrated a near perfect week with the SLS AMG GT3, claiming the series title in the ADAC GT Masters and a race win on the legendary Nürburgring North Loop. Marc Basseng and Markus Winkelhock, also driving a Gullwing, were meanwhile wrapping up the FIA GT1 World Championship at Donington Park in England. One week earlier, Dominik Baumann and Maximilian Buhk had scored a victory in the FIA GT3 European Championship in their SLS AMG.

Due to a clash of engagements, Reiter Engineering did not enter for either of the races, but Hans Reiter managed to squeeze in a visit to Hockenheim on Friday. "We are racing at Donington Park in England this weekend, but there aren't any practice sessions there today," said Reiter, who was keen to meet up with customers Ingo Leipert and Uwe Geipel.

Team Rosberg principal Peter Reinisch also paid a visit to the final weekend of the ADAC Masters Weekend. Another face spotted in the crowd was Herbert Lambert, former manager of the now defunct Argo Racing team.

Brothers Jörg and Tim Bergmeister (2010 race winners at Hockenheim in a Mühlner-Porsche 911 GT3 R) called in at the drivers' paddock on Friday afternoon.

The new ADAC Masters Weekend champions were given a great reception on Sunday evening. The ADAC had organised a grand trophy award ceremony in the Greschbachhalle, located inside the Hockenheim paddock. More than 500 guests celebrated with the new champions into the early hours of Monday.

Christian Engelhart and Martin Ragginger took pole positions on the same race weekend for the second time this season. The Porsche drivers had already shared the two P1 starts earlier this year at the Lausitzring.

Schubert Motorsport's debut win in Race 1 at Hockenheim was the second victory for a BMW Z4 GT3 in the ADAC GT Masters. Sebastian Asch and Maximilian Götz notched up a third 'Super Sports Car League' victory for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG with their championship winning run on Sunday.

Claudia Hürtgen (Aachen) is acquiring something of a reputation for winning races on the last day of the ADAC GT Masters season. In 2009, she triumphed in the two final races of the year at the Motorsport Arena driving a BMW ALPINA B6 GT3. At Hockenheim, the fastest lady competing in the ADAC GT Masters has now claimed her third race win, also on the final weekend.

20,700 spectators came through the turnstiles during the Hockenheim race weekend.

It's not hard to guess where Maximilian Götz continued his post-race celebrations: the new ADAC GT Masters champion runs the Schlawiner Bar in his hometown of Uffenheim, just south of Würzburg.

Audi driver Carsten Tilke won't be twiddling his thumbs during the winter break: the son of racetrack architect Hermann Tilke is currently working on his PhD thesis.
