Lambda Performance had to miss out on the Nürburgring weekend. After engine problems with their Ford GT, the Wiesbaden outfit were forced to drop out at the last minute. Driver Jesse Krohn turned up at the track anyway to see what the opposition were up to. Lambda fully intend to be back in action at Hockenheim, hopefully with two Fords.
Oschersleben-based Schubert Motorsport could only muster one BMW Z4 GT3 for last weekend's races. Abdulaziz Al Faisal, one half of the partnership driving the second of the Z4 GT3s, was still recovering from a recent operation.
Well over 15,000 spectators came through the turnstiles for the weekend's racing at the Nürburgring. The best-selling tickets were those granting access to the grid; in fact, they sold out.
Typical Eifel weather with rain and fog on Friday evening brought back memories of the first of the two ADAC GT Masters at this venue on the 2012 calendar; in July, it rained almost continuously for three days. This time, the bad weather moved on during the early hours of Saturday. On Sunday it was actually quite sunny, with temperatures of 22 degrees.
Mercedes driver Dominik Baumann will be spending no fewer than ten days in the Eifel. "This coming weekend, I'm competing in the FIA GT3 European Championship at the Nürburgring, so it makes sense to stay right here," said the Austrian. Also back in action at the Nürburgring this weekend are Maxime Martin, Dino Lunardi, Maximilian Buhk, rhino's Leipert Motorsport, Robert Bell, David Mengesdorf, Harald Proczyk, HEICO Motorsport, Frank Stippler, Christopher Mies and Edward Sandström.
Another driver presenting a sick note just before last weekend's racing was Christian Ott who was due to drive the McLaren MP4-12C GT3 entered by MRS GT-Racing. Team boss Karsten Molitor got on the phone fast and persuaded McLaren to send works driver Rob Bell across as an emergency replacement. "He knows the car better than anyone else; what's more, he has done some testing with us already this season."
Driver change No 2: On Saturday morning, Frank Schmickler was suffering the after-effects of recent eye surgery; with his swollen eye, he looked more like a prize fighter than a racing driver. Jens Richter came in at short notice as a substitute.
The new mobile Live Timing also proved very popular with the ADAC GT Masters drivers at the Nürburgring. Quite a few of them had iPads in their cockpits during free practice. In this way, they were able to keep up to date with what was happening during the session whenever they pulled in for a quick pit stop.
Dino Lunardi celebrated his seventh ADAC GT Masters victory at the Nürburgring, which puts him level with Luca Ludwig who also has seven wins to his name. The only drivers to have notched up more wins in the series are Christopher Haase, Albert von Thurn und Taxis and Peter Kox.
Callaway Competition's win on Sunday was their tenth overall in the ADAC GT Masters since 2007. This puts the team run by Ernst Wöhr and Giovanni Ciccone ahead of ABT Sportsline in the record books and makes them the second-most successful team in the series behind Reiter Engineering.
