Offshore at the Nürburgring: Camaro in Eifel rain: Very wet ADAC GT Masters weekend

A marine diesel engine would have been more suitable at this weekends ADAC GT Masters round at the Nürburgring then the 8-litre V8-engine of the Chevrolet Camaro GT entered by YACO Racing powered by Jochen Schweizer. Three days of rain in the Eifel made the weekend a difficult task for Max Sandritter/Christian Bracke and Achim Winter/Charlie Geipel in the pair of Camaro GT's.

As expected, the weekend on the short sprint layout of the Nürburgring was difficult for the pair of Camaro GT's entered by YACO racing powered by Jochen Schweizer: The largest car of the grid on the shortest track of the calendar: No natural fit. Rain didn't make the task easier, but there were also some good news: In the wet free practice, Max Sandritter and Christian Bracke had a solid position in the midfield.

The first race started under extremely difficult weather conditions and offered everything one not really needs: Rain just before the start, a start behind the Safety Car and a drying track in the latter part of the race. Winter/Geipel finished the race in 31st position, Sandritter/Bracke five places behind.

In the second heat, an Audi took Charlie Geipel out already in lap three. As the engine wouldn't refire again, Geipel was forced to retire the Camaro. Sandritter and Bracke finished the wet race, which featured a torrential downpour halfway trough, in 32nd position.

Team leader Uwe Geipel was not satisfied with the result, but looks optimistic to the next race. "Our results at the Nürburgring were not a reason to cheer. But if you go into detail and analyze our times exactly, you can already see that we are making progress. Looking at the lap times of our two fastest drivers, Max Sandritter and Charlie Geipel, they would have been in 15th position, if they would share one car. We will not start to judge the figures better then they are, but we have some positives trends. Beside this, we also lacked traction this weekend on a track where traction is very important and I'm afraid this would have been even worse in dry conditions. Now we are looking forward to the next race at the Red Bull Ring in Austria. A fast track, which we know from testing and were we expect a lot."

Driver quotes after the race:

Christian Bracke: "We had some trouble getting the rear tires up to temperature and therefore we lacked grip on the rear. In the first race, we gambled on tires and took slicks on a drying track, but this didn't work out. In race two, I was really getting into it, when suddenly the car had an adventurous and erratic driving behaviour. When Max stepped into the car, it went better."

Charlie Geipel: "We had traction problems on this track in the dry, and when it's wet, it's not getting any better. But as predicted, the Camaro GT was among the fasted car in the quick third sector. In the second race, Luca Ludwig took me out and I suppose something on the starter motor broke when he hit me, as the engine wouldn't restart and I had to retire."
