The Nissan GT-R Nismo stands out amongst the starting field of super sports cars in the ADAC GT Masters. Having entered one of the rare GT3 Nissans - only three of which have ever been built - in the 'Super Sports Car League', Schulze Motorsport are raring to go at the Sachsenring. For the Nissan team based in the vicinity of Leipzig, the race on the rollercoaster track in Saxony counts as a sort of home fixture. "We have a relatively short journey of 100 kilometres to the Sachsenring," says Tobias Schulze who will be sharing the cockpit of the only Japanese GT3 sports car in the line-up with his younger brother Michael.
The newcomers in the ADAC GT Masters have made noticeable progress with their new Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 over the first two race weekends of the Super Sports Car League. "At the start of the season in Oschersleben, we were suffering a test and practice deficit. But in the meantime, we've caught up and are getting on much better with the car," says Schulze.
At Zandvoort, the Schulze brothers qualified in the midfield: "In the race itself, however, the chassis tuning was a little out, but we're learning more about the car from weekend to weekend."
In order to accelerate the learning process, Schulze Motorsport are preparing for the forthcoming race at the Sachsenring with extra testing, aided and abetted by Nissan developers JR Motorsports: "Up to now, our Nissan GT-R has worked very well. We just feel that we've been missing out on straight line speed. We're hoping that new engine control software can help us out here and can also reduce fuel consumption, because the V6 twin-turbo in the Nissan has been relatively thirsty so far. We also have to do some detailed work on the chassis to correct oversteer coming out of slow corners."
Tobias Schulze is feeling optimistic about the home race at the Sachsenring, both from a technical angle and from a driver perspective. "The Nissan behaves well on fast, flowing corners and delivers excellent grip. So we should be in good shape for the Sachsenring. And speaking as a driver, the Sachsenring is far and away my favourite track. When I last competed there a few years ago in the Clio Cup, I won both races, plus my brother Michael has also won there in the past in the Alfa Cup. So we have a good record at the Sachsenring and are hoping for a successful weekend."
