The finale of the 2012 ADAC Masters Weekend takes place at the Hockenheimring. Not until the final races of the year have been run will we have our new champions in the ADAC GT Masters and in the partner series: Formel ADAC, the ATS Formel-3-Cup and the MINI TROPHY. ADAC Sports President Hermann Tomczyk talks about the exciting season that has just passed, about the successful promotion of young drivers in ADAC motor racing and future prospects for the ADAC Masters Weekend.
Mr. Tomczyk, the fourth season of the ADAC Masters Weekend is drawing to a close here at Hockenheim. Do you think it has been a success?
ADAC Sports President Hermann Tomczyk: I think we have had an exciting season with top-class racing. The ADAC GT Masters caters for a number of manufactures, offering excitement and variety. It has been an excellent season with plenty of spectacular races and close racing at the finish line.
You mentioned diversity in the Super Sports Cars League. Is that something that is particularly important for fans?
Yes, definitely. Although the ADAC GT Masters has only been in existence since 2007, the ever-increasing numbers of spectators testify to its importance and its popularity. The fans' enthusiasm is very noticeable. In the paddock, spectators get to see a variety of dream cars in the metal - most people dream of someday driving or owning such a car, and seeing these cars race exerts a special fascination.
How satisfied are you with the interest shown by spectators?
We are satisfied, but what is particularly important is that we have recorded growth everywhere. When a circuit is added to the race calendar for the first time, you have to give fans time to identify with it and realise what is on offer as part of the ADAC Masters Weekend. We are on the right track in that respect.
What can fans expect to see here at the close of the season in Hockenheim?
Well, an exciting championship finale in the ADAC GT Masters and in the Formel ADAC, for sure. The best teams and top drivers have demonstrated incredible consistency, and so the struggle for places at the head of the championship standings is continuing into the very last race.
Are there any particular highlights that fans can look forward to?
Actually, both races in the ADAC GT Masters will be very exciting, but we also expect to see thrilling racing and exciting battles out on track in the support series. At Hockenheim, we will see not only a resolution to the title race in the ADAC GT Masters, but also the new champions in the Formel ADAC, the ATS Formel-3-Cup and the MINI TROPHY will be determined. I am certain that motor racing throughout the whole of this weekend will prove to be very diverse and thrilling.
Youth development is very important at the ADAC, in Formel ADAC and in the ADAC Sports Foundation.
There are some outstanding youngsters in the current year. However, one must consider support of aspiring drivers as a whole. The ADAC is the only organisation that for two decades now has run a programme to promote young drivers from karting through to formula racing. However, the ADAC Sports Foundation also subsequently helps young drivers make their way in motor racing. The results speak for themselves: current Formula 1 drivers Sebastian Vettel, Nico Rosberg, Timo Glock and Nico Hülkenberg all began their careers in various junior ADAC formula series. A considerable number of today's drivers in the DTM and in the sports car sector have come up from this pool of young talent. In order to be successful, work on a concept such as ours has to be sustained over many years, and that's precisely what we at the ADAC in Germany are doing.
This year, many celebrities such as motorcycle ace Max Neukirchner and ex-Formula 1 driver Gerhard Berger have come along as spectators to the ADAC Masters Weekend. Is this further evidence of interest in the series?
It demonstrates the attractiveness of such an event, because celebrities ultimately go to places that they find interesting and where they can gain media coverage. The fact that stars like Arthur Abraham, Ross Anthony and Timo Glock have come to see us at the track proves that the ADAC Masters Weekend is becoming well established.
Finally, the future. What can fans look forward to in the 2013 season?
We will maintain our present course, but there are always things that can be improved and optimised - we will be doing that during the winter break. Maybe we will add one or two new tracks, but we will certainly return to those circuits where we have built up a following. That includes races outside of Germany, as at Austria's Red Bull Ring. Moreover, I believe that once again next year, the motor racing will be absolutely brilliant, and we are currently working hard to ensure that happens.
