Toni Seiler (Callaway Competition) has already shown in previous years that the Lausitzring is his favourite track. Indeed, victories at the same venue in both 2007 and 2009 propelled Seiler to the top of the standings, and the Swiss driver's performance in the second race this Sunday gave him his second victory of the year in the amateurs.
Right up until the penultimate lap of the race, it seemed that Swen Dolenc (FACH AUTO TECH) in his Porsche 911 GT3 had victory sewn up, but then he got stranded in the gravel, thereby handing the amateur honours to Toni Seiler. The Corvette driven by Seiler and Frank Kechele started as third-best-placed car in the amateur standings behind the Porsche of René Bourdeaux and Alfred Renauer (Team GT3 Kasko).
After Renauer skidded off track, Seiler's yellow Corvette moved up into second place from which he was ultimately to become the beneficiary of Dolenc's misfortune. During the second stint, Dolenc's closest championship rival, Kristian Poulsen (Young Driver AMR) from Denmark, was steadily moving up the field. Poulsen pushed hard, overtaking both Georg Engelhardt (Team GT3 Kasko) in his Porsche 911 GT3 R and René Bourdeaux to finish just 0.6 seconds behind winner Seiler and leaving Bourdeaux to pick up third.
"The Lausitzring has always been my lucky circuit," said a delighted Seiler. "The last few laps were close, but I just managed to squeeze in ahead of Poulsen. After problems on both Friday and Saturday, the Corvette ran beautifully today."
For René Bourdeaux, this was his second appearance of the weekend on the amateur podium: "Unfortunately, my team-mate Alfred spun off the track when we were in third, which was of course a big disappointment. After that, I really pushed as hard as I could to still make it onto the amateur podium. I closed the gap on my team-mate Georg Engelhardt, and after a satisfying scrap, I managed to get past him. I really couldn't be happier to come away with two podium finishes this weekend."
Georg Engelhardt ended the race in fourth place, just ahead of Corvette driver Remo Lips (Callaway Competition) and the mixed doubles of Andrina Gugger and Otto Klohs (FACH AUTO TECH) in their Porsche 911 GT3 R.
With just four races remaining, Dolenc is now 24 points ahead of Poulsen in the amateur stakes, with Seiler trailing Poulsen by a further 35.
