ADAC GT Masters 2013: A season of top marques: The novelty hasn't worn off

Seven years of the ADAC GT Masters and the novelty still hasn't worn off. The final race weekend of the 2013 ADAC GT Masters is still to come, but before the results of the last two races are in, it is apparent that the seventh season of the Super Sports Car League has arguably been the best yet. The ADAC decided to reduce the size of the field for the 2013 campaign - a bold move which seems to have paid off, because it does not seem to have had any adverse effect on the quality of the competition, with more than ten cars capable of securing victory on any weekend. In the 14 races so far, seven different driver partnerships have stood on the top podium rung. All the sports cars that have competed in every race this year - Audi, BMW, Corvette, Ford, Mercedes and Porsche - have wins to their credit, and at Hockenheim, eleven drivers will still be in with a more or less realistic chance of claiming the title. "The 2013 ADAC GT Masters season has been more exciting than ever," says ADAC Sports President Hermann Tomczyk in his end-of-term report. "The field has been of such a high quality that almost any of the drivers were capable of winning. Consequently, the fans have enjoyed consistently spectacular racing, and they can look forward to the most exciting climax to a campaign that we have ever witnessed when the series is decided at Hockenheim."

The season has seen a number of records broken. At the Red Bull Ring, Diego Alessi and Daniel Keilwitz set the fastest pace ever in an ADAC GT Masters race, yet still won by only the narrowest of margins: after the full 60 minutes at an average speed of 164km/h, the Corvette duo crossed the finish line just 0.2 seconds ahead of the second-placed Mercedes-Benz. With up to 18 cars all posting lap times within a second of each other in free practice and qualifying, the field has never before been so well matched. For the fourth year in succession, all races have been shown live on kabel eins; this season, Germany's leading news channel N24 got in on the act, broadcasting a magazine programme showing highlights from each of the ADAC GT Masters weekends. "The live broadcasts on kabel eins together with the ADAC GT Masters magazine programmes on kabel eins, Sport1, Sport1+ and N24 have increased media coverage to an unprecedented level," adds Tomczyk. "The involvement of N24 in particular has enabled us to open up the series to a new target group - the decision makers."

2009 ADAC GT Masters champion Christian Abt now owns and runs the Prosperia C Abt Racing team with its stable of Audis. He knows the ADAC GT Masters from the perspective of driver as well as team boss and is delighted by the way the series has developed over recent years: "The fact that we have had so many different winners shows how closely contested the series has been this year. The 2013 ADAC GT Masters has served up a feast of top-quality motor racing for the fans and has taken huge steps forward, both on and off the track."

As boss of the team that has contested the ADAC GT Masters from its inception, Callaway Competition's Giovanni Ciccone has observed the development of the series from Race 1 through to Race 100 at the Slovakia Ring. The Corvette devotee professes himself well impressed with the seventh season: "The ADAC GT Masters has never been so tight. With everyone being so well matched, there has been no shortage of surprises. On some tracks, the results were completely different from what everyone had expected. The sheer number of genuine contenders for the title shows just how good this competition is."

ADAC Sports President Hermann Tomczyk is upbeat about the prospects for the coming season: "We are working very hard to ensure that the fans can enjoy racing of an equally high standard next year. We have already committed ourselves to a programme of eight race weekends in Germany and neighbouring countries. And in 2014, all the races will once again be shown live and in their entirety by our exclusive TV partner kabel eins. The ADAC GT Masters has a solid basis on which we intend to continue building."
