ADAC GT Masters·21.6.2013

American heavy metal: Viper makes comeback : Chrysler SRT Viper returns to GT3 class as from 2014.

A sports car legend will be back in the GT3 class next year and might also appear on the grid in the ADAC GT Masters: Chrysler subsidiary SRT (Street Racing Technologies) is readying the next generation Viper for competition on the race track in the GT3 class. SRT aims to enter the new Viper GT3 R, whose race debut proper is scheduled for 2014, in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Like the previous Viper model that contested the ADAC GT Masters from 2007 to 2011, this new beast is a real muscle car: an 8.4-litre V-10 engine produces the grunt under the long bonnet. Future Viper drivers will have no need to complain about any lack of power: SRT says that the Viper produces 680bhp.

The Viper was developed by SRT in collaboration with specialists at Riley Technologies in Mooresville/North Carolina. SRT has recently set up a new motor racing division based in the South of France to look after Viper customer teams in Europe.

Renowned constructor Riley Technologies, whose cars have won the 24 Hours of Daytona nine consecutive times, used the GTS-R as the model for the GT3 Viper with which SRT/Chrysler intends to compete in this weekend's 24 Hours of Le Mans for the first time in more than a decade.

SRT is now accepting orders for the racing car that costs around 340,000 euros. The first vehicles will be delivered to customer teams in the New Year ready for the 2014 season.
