Bourdeaux fastest in Gentlemen class at Spa: Porsche driver celebrates victory in renamed amateur category

The weather at the Spa-Francorchamps Formula 1 track in Belgium didn´t do the ADAC GT Masters Gentlemen drivers any favours today. A deluge of rain around 20 minutes into the race and a good five minutes before the pit stop window made for difficult track conditions. All contestants delayed changing to wet weather tyres until the mandatory half-time stop, which meant that they had another couple of laps to put in on the Ardennes rollercoaster before changing slicks for YOKOHAMA rain tyres. Munich-based René Bourdeaux (Tonino powered by Herberth Motorsport) driving a Porsche 911 GT3 R mastered the conditions better than any of his rivals for the Gentlemen title to claim his second successive race win in this category.

Swiss driver Remo Lips (Callaway Competition) was the leading amateur in the early stage of the race, but after six laps, the Corvette man had to return to the pits with an overheated V8 engine to have some dirt removed from the radiator. Christina Nielsen from Denmark then took the lead in the category, but her delight was cut short when Rene Bourdeaux overtook her Farnbacher Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R one lap later. Bourdeaux held on to the position for the remainder of his stint, and team-mate Alfred Renauer completed the job in the second half of the race. Bourdeaux: "My race went brilliantly. I started from quite far back, but I promptly made good several positions. Then the rain came - first light drizzle followed by a real downpour - and I was just willing the pit stop window to open, because the conditions out there on slicks were criminal."

Also making an impressive charge up the field to finish as runner-up in the Gentlemen class was ADAC GT Masters newcomer Paul Green in the Vita4One Racing Team BMW Z4 GT3. The former ADAC Procar challenger took a spin on Lap 1 but then, with the help of co-driver Jonas Giesler, fought back to finish his debut ADAC GT Masters race on the second rung of the Gentlemen podium. "My first ADAC GT Masters race went much better than I had expected, although the conditions didn´t exactly help," said Green.

Christina Nielsen completed the podium group, despite two drive-through penalties for infringements during the pit stop. The well-travelled American duo of Charles Putman and Charles Espenlaub driving a Porsche 911 GT3 R had a stroke of bad luck in their ADAC GT Masters debut when the hydraulic jack of their Porsche failed during their pit stop. This cost Putnam and Espenlaub an extra minute on their pit stop and possibly a podium finish.
