Corvette driver Beisel wins in Gentlemen category: Beisel claims winner's trophy in Gentlemen class at first attempt

The second race at the Sachsenring had a rich seam of drama in the Gentlemen class. Victory went to Corvette driver Gerd Beisel (RWT Racing Team) in his first venture into the Super Sports Car League, with fellow Corvette driver Remo Lips (Callaway Competition) finishing as runner-up. René Bourdeaux in the Tonino powered by Herberth Motorsport Porsche 911 GT3 R completed the podium party.

Marcel Leipert partnering Eduard Leganov in the Team rhino's Leipert Motorsport Lamborghini Gallardo established an early lead in the Gentlemen category on a wet track but soon came under pressure from Niclas Kentenich making his first appearance behind the wheel of the Vita4One Racing Team BMW Z4. On lap five, Kentenich took over the lead, maintaining it until the mandatory pit stop. After the driver changeover, Paul Green kept the Z4 on course for what looked like being his second win of the season. But nine laps from the end of the race, the category winner at Spa skidded off track into the tyre wall and was forced to retire.

René Bourdeaux was the immediate beneficiary, ensconcing himself as the leader, but was then involved in a collision with Danish driver Christina Nielsen (Farnbacher Racing) which knocked her out of the race and severely compromised the roadworthiness of his own vehicle. Three laps from the end of the race, Bourdeaux had to steer his damaged Porsche 911 into the pits. This paved the way for ADAC GT Masters debutant Gerd Beisel, ably assisted by Sven Barth, to post the first win for a Corvette in the 2013 Gentlemen championship. Remo Lips was runner-up while Bourdeaux still qualified for third prize.

Gerd Beisel: "Sven handed the Corvette over to me in an excellent position and I just had to do the best I could. It was difficult at the start, as cars kept spinning on the track, so you had to pick your way through carefully."
