Oschersleben: The new season of the ADAC GT Masters gets under way this weekend in the etropolis Motorsport Arena Oschersleben. Featuring a full field of drivers, some well-known new names and a huge variety of different marques, ADAC Sports President Hermann Tomczyk expects an exciting and varied season in the Super Sports Cars League.
Mr Tomczyk, the ADAC GT Masters is now in its seventh season. What can spectators look forward to this year?
ADAC Sports President Hermann Tomczyk: We are pleased to offer fans a varied programme of motor racing at the highest level once again this season. Last year´s ADAC GT Masters races were very closely fought, and the championship was not decided until the final race. Drivers and teams in the Super Sports Cars League, as we call it, will definitely give no quarter again this season and produce plenty of superb racing. Some of the best teams around will contest 16 races this season with the most beautiful cars in the world, so high-octane racing is guaranteed.
Does this very marked brand diversity make the ADAC GT Masters particularly attractive?
ADAC Sports President Hermann Tomczyk: Yes, most certainly. From Mercedes Gullwing, thoroughbred racing Porsche to American steam hammer, the ADAC GT Masters offers almost unsurpassable brand diversity and undoubtedly has something for every fan. The regulations have been revised for the new season so that races are more evenly balanced and more exciting. We have taken measures to optimise vehicle classifications through the FIA´s Balance of Performance testing and can expect an even more competitive field.
The partner racing series of the ADAC GT Masters also offer spectators top-class motor racing.
ADAC Sports President Hermann Tomczyk: The ADAC GT Masters is our flagship series, but our partner and guest series are also impressive, offering some great motor racing. This year´s Formel ADAC field is again very strong and very competitive. I am in no doubt that the youngsters will show their mettle once more and give us some fantastic racing during their three events each weekend. The ATS Formula 3 Cup, the "DTC des DMSB - ADAC PROCAR" and the MINI TROPHY lifestyle brand event offer a varied programme, ensuring that every ADAC GT Masters weekend is very special. One thing is for sure, spectators will get to see thrilling racing on each of the three days and will certainly get their money´s worth. We have lined up another spectacular event for the season opener at Oschersleben: The HAIGO Historic Cup has a very special charm of its own and is full of real East German flair.
Formel ADAC is a springboard for the motor racing stars of tomorrow. What do you personally think of this initiative?
ADAC Sports President Hermann Tomczyk: I myself am particularly keen on Formel ADAC, you know, and would ask fans to share my interest in these drivers - they are stars in the making. Past events have shown that the ADAC Academy has been the perfect springboard to the amazing world of motor racing for many future professional racing drivers. Current Formula 1 aces, three-time world champion Sebastian Vettel, Nico Rosberg and Nico Hülkenberg, have all lined up in this ADAC junior series during their careers.
Close contact with fans is very important at ADAC GT Masters weekends. In what ways does the ADAC make that possible at events?
ADAC Sports President Hermann Tomczyk: Apart from the action on the track, we want to bring the world of motor racing as close as possible to spectators. Fans can walk through the paddock and watch as the teams work on their cars and drivers prepare to race. These pit walks before ADAC GT Masters races are always extremely popular, attracting large crowds to the pit lane. So you see, spectators have every opportunity to closely observe the teams at work.
kabel eins will feature all 16 races of the ADAC GT Masters this year, and the contract with the company has been extended for another two years, until 2014. How important is this move?
ADAC Sports President Hermann Tomczyk: I am delighted that kabel eins, our excellent TV partner, is set to show live broadcasts of the ADAC GT Masters races this year and next. Consequently, fans can once again look forward to seeing super live broadcasts on free-to-air TV, and we aim to work hard together to further strengthen the series. What is more, we have also ensured a high degree of planning security for our partners.
Bringing on young drivers is an essential part of ADAC´s programme. There are two special innovations this year.
ADAC Sports President Hermann Tomczyk: Yes, indeed. We have established the ADAC OPEL Rallye Cup in collaboration with Opel. This series is ideal for hopeful youngsters wanting to take their first steps in rallying without breaking the bank. We all hope to see a German world rally champion soon and the ADAC has taken on the task of paving the way and is in it for the long haul. A special highlight: competitors in the ADAC OPEL Rallye Cup will be racing as the ADAC Rallye Deutschland takes place (22nd-25th August) and will be able to see how their skills compare with the world´s rally elite. Also, with the newly created ADAC MX Academy powered by KTM we can offer children the perfect introduction to the sport of motocross. The sport is booming in Germany, thanks to the international success of Ken Roczen and Team Germany. We now need to create the basis for future success.
