Latest addition to GT3 class: Maserati is the most recent newcomer to join the international success formula with which the ADAC GT Masters is also associated. Swiss Team, based in Switzerland, has developed a GT3 racing car using the underpinnings from the Maserati GranTurismo MC. Since the end of 2011, the team has been working on the coupé with Maserati's support. Testing of the first prototype has been ongoing since May 2012 and two races were contested last year.
A milestone in the car's development will be reached this week when the Maserati receives its GT3 homologation certificate from the FIA, the sport's governing body. The Maserati will also be subjected to the FIA's official balance of performance test, used to determine the basic classification of the various GT3 cars for the 2013 season. Swiss Team will have the Maserati ready for sale to prospective clients this summer.
Led by Guido Bonfiglio, Swiss Team, from the Italian-speaking area of Switzerland know their Maseratis. Ably guided by ex-Formula 1 and DTM engineer Giuseppe Angiulli, they have already successfully developed a racing version of the four-door Maserati Quattroporte for the Italian Superstar series, securing the title in 2011. The GranTurismo tips the scales at just 1,230kg in race trim and its engine also comes courtesy of the Quattroporte. Under the pretty coupé's bonnet, a 4.7-litre V8 engine does the business, producing over 530bhp.
Swiss Team founder Guido Bonfiglio said: "We wanted to develop a GT3 version of the Maserati GranTurismo MC, as we believe that this just has to be a winning car. We are well aware of how ambitious a project this is, but we enjoy a challenge, whether out on the track or in the design studio. Our competitors are car manufacturers, who participate to a greater or lesser degree in developing and racing their GT3 sports cars. Our team may be only small, but we hope, nevertheless, to cause a stir."
