Nielsen takes lead in Gentlemen classification: Third win of the season for Danish driver in Gentlemen category

The title battle in the Gentlemen classification took a change of direction at the Slovakia Ring. Christina Nielsen (Farnbacher Racing) secured her second win of the season in the Porsche 911 GT3 R and the lead at the head of the standings, since title rival René Bourdeaux (Tonino powered by Herberth Motorsport) missed the podium in the second race in Slovakia.

There was little to suggest at the start of the race that Nielsen and team-mate Kuba Giermaziak would achieve the win. Giermaziak was only fourth after the start, and Toni Seilers' Callaway Corvette that had been driven by Mike Parisy during the first stint was in the lead, followed by Bourdeaux's Porsche with Alfred Renauer at the wheel. Three drive-through penalties then served to thoroughly mix up the positions of the main contenders in the category. Bordeaux's Porsche and the two Corvettes driven by Seiler and Lips had achieved personal sector best times under the yellow flag and were subsequently handed drive-through penalties.

The drive-through penalties bumped Nielsen up in the second half of the race from fourth place to P1 in the Gentlemen class. The Danish driver had a considerable lead on Remo Lips and Toni Seiler, achieving her third victory of the season and top ranking in the standings.

Christina Nielsen: "Our car was not particularly easy to drive in today's race, but we just went at our own pace and, in contrast to the competition, didn't allow ourselves to make any mistakes, stayed clear of any penalties and so, took the win in our class."

Bourdeaux was not very pleased with his race: "After the start, things still looked good for us and we were on target, but then, unfortunately, we were hit with a drive-through. After serving the penalty, we were too far behind the others. Lips even managed to pass me but I was battling with severe understeer. Actually, I didn't intend things to hot up this much in the championship race, but it's great for the fans. I'm going to really step on the gas in Hockenheim and aim to overtake Christina."

Nielsen now has a lead of one point on Bourdeaux ahead of the Hockenheim finale. Lips has a deficit of 36 points.
