Camaro powers its way to the top : Yankee steam hammer achieves breakthrough in ADAC GT Masters in Austria

After three years of hard development work, the Chevrolet Camaro GT with more than 650 bhp has finally made the breakthrough in the ADAC GT Masters. The Sareni Chevrolet Camaro GT developed by Reiter Engineering had its most successful race weekend in the Super Sports Car League at the Red Bull Ring. Albert von Thurn und Taxis and Tomas Enge finished the first race at the Red Bull Ring in second place, plus Reiter Engineering were on the front row for the second race. Not only were the team led by Hans Reiter pleased with the good result produced by the mighty Camaro to round off the first half of the ADAC GT Masters season in Austria, but almost everyone in the ADAC GT Masters paddock gave them the thumbs-up.

The fact that the Camaro was about to become a serious competitor in the Super Sports Car League was already becoming apparent at the start of the season. However, the Camaro was hit by bad luck at the first race weekend in Oschersleben and at the guest fixture in the Netherlands. "No one would have thought at Oschersleben and Zandvoort that we would manage to make the car competitive," said Tomas Enge. "We always knew that we were on the right track, we were just unlucky a lot of the time. At Zandvoort, the rain put a spanner in the works, because we´re still down in the wet. Ours is the only car in the field to run on 19 inch diameter tyres. Getting those big tyres up to the right temperature is very hard in cool temperatures and especially difficult in the wet."

An upward trend was already becoming apparent at the Lausitzring. Von Thurn und Taxis/Enge finished the first race in tenth place, achieving the first top-ten result for the Camaro in the ADAC GT Masters. In the second race, only a penalty incurred after a collision prevented a second top ten result. The breakthrough came in Austria with the successful qualifying session and the points-scoring finish in the first race, plus the Camaro car was in the lead for a total of 15 laps in the second race before being forced to retire with a technical problem.

"We have put a lot of effort into developing a supercar that can fight for the top spots in a highly competitive series like the ADAC GT Masters," said Hans Reiter, pleased with the reward for three years development work. "The result from the Red Bull Ring shows that it pays not to give up and to always keep fighting. We were relatively optimistic, even after the Lausitzring, but we never thought that we would be so successful in Austria."

We can expect a lot from the Camaro in the second half of the ADAC GT Masters season which starts on the weekend of August 8th-10th at the Slovakia Ring in Bratislava. Even the opposition are prepared to give the American steam hammer its due. "The Camaro is very fast not only on the straights but is now also very good through the turns," said Maximilian Buhk after finishing third behind the muscle car at the Red Bull Ring.
