The leaders in the ADAC GT Masters continue to be tightly bunched going into the third race weekend of the season at the Lausitzring. In bright sunshine and with the thermometer touching 29°C, the fastest lap was set by reigning ADAC GT Masters champion Daniel Keilwitz and new partner Oliver Gavin. Their Callaway Competition Corvette Z06.R GT3 was, however, a mere 0.052 seconds faster than the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG (BKK MOBIL OIL Zakspeed) driven by Luca Ludwig and Alon Day, who at one point topped the timesheets. Despite the high temperatures at midday, Keilwitz and Gavin were nearly a second faster than the best time of Kelvin van der Linde and René Rast in their Prosperia C Abt Audi R8 LMS ultra.
Farnbacher Racing's Philip Frommenwiler and Sebastian Asch were third fastest in the best of the Porsche 911 GT3 Rs ahead of Maximilian Buhk and Maximilian Götz in another Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. Frommenwiler and Asch are starting the third race weekend of the 2014 ADAC GT Masters campaign in a brand new Porsche: following an accident in a race in England last weekend, Farnbacher Racing rebuilt the 911 GT3 R on a body shell in record time this week.
Florian Stoll and Daniel Dobitsch in a kfzteile24 APR Motorsport Audi R8 LMS ultra finished the session in fifth place ahead of two PIXUM Team Schubert BMW Z4 GT3s driven by Claudia Hürtgen and Dominik Baumann (P6), and Max Sandritter and Jens Klingmann (P7).
Also making it into the Top Ten were Albert von Thurn und Taxis and Tomas Enge in a Reiter Engineering Chevrolet Camaro. At one point during the morning, Enge took the American muscle car up to third place in the timesheets, but at the end of the 60-minute session, it was down in tenth place behind the two Prosperia C Abt Racing Audi R8 LMS ultras driven by van der Linde and Rast and by Fabian Hamprecht and Nicki Thiim. Championship leaders Jaap van Lagen and Martin Ragginger in their GW IT Racing Team Schütz Motorsport Porsche 911 GT3 R finished Friday morning's free practice in eleventh.
Ex-Formula 1 driver Jaime Alguersuari and co-driver Nico Bastian in a ROWE RACING Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 were 13th fastest, while World Rally Champion Sébastien Ogier partnering Markus Winkelhock in a Prosperia C Abt Audi R8 LMS ultra was trailing in 22nd after technical issues.
