Handlos on course for Gentlemen title: Herbert Handlos notches up win number eight in the 2014 Gentlemen championship

Herbert Handlos (TONINO Team Herberth) remains on course to pick up the Gentlemen trophy. The Austrian celebrated his eighth win of the season at the Sachsenring today. With his closest pursuer in the title race, Dominic Jöst (TONINO Team Herberth), finishing in second place, Handlos was able to extend his lead in the table by only 1½ points. Nonetheless, the Porsche man has a further opportunity in Race 2 on Sunday to clinch the title ahead of time. If Handlos succeeds in increasing his points lead from 87 to 100, he will already have the championship sewn up ahead of the grand finale at Hockenheim. However, the current championship leader is himself not expecting the title to be decided until the last weekend: "Because of the way the points system in the Gentlemen competition works, I can't rely on my own result alone to settle the matter on Sunday - I also have to rely on a slip-up by the others. I somehow think the title won't be decided until the final weekend."

Jöst and team-mate Florian Scholze had a good chance of securing their maiden win of the season in this 13th race. Right from the start, Jöst had a lead on the Corvette driven by Remo Lips (Callaway Competition). Scholze then defended the top spot in the class after the driver changeover. In the closing stages, though, he was put under pressure by Alfred Renauer, team-mate to Handlos. Renauer finally came off best in the ensuing scrap to ensure victory in class. Lips and co-driver Lennart Marioneck finished in third place after the mandatory pit stop was too short and they incurred a time penalty. Nathan Wolf and Anton Wossos (GW IT Racing Team Schütz Motorsport) placed fourth in their Porsche 911 GT3.

"The race was very good, except that the two safety car periods in the first half of the race were not much fun," said Handlos after his eighth win of the season. "The result is excellent, especially as we didn't have a good grid position. The pace was decent, but overtaking is very tricky on this track. My team-mate Dominic Jöst was in front of me, but I was able to close the gap really well. It's great that we've now made it into the Top Ten overall."
