Herbert Handlos (TONINO Team Herberth) took another step towards lifting the Gentlemen title at the Nürburgring. Together with Alfred Renauer, he took his seventh class win of the season to extend his lead in the championship. Second place for Dominic Jöst and Florian Scholze ensured a one-two victory for TONINO Team Herberth. Anton Wossos and Wolf Nathan (GW IT Racing Team, Schütz Motorsport) booked third place in another Porsche 911 GT3 R.
Handlos and Renauer achieved a supreme start/finish victory. In the intial stages of the race, Renauer moved the Porsche up into fourth overall but lost several positions after a spin on the slippery track. However, he remained on top in the Gentlemen class. Renauer handed over the Porsche to Handlos in the lead, who was then put under pressure by Scholze. In a three-way battle with an Audi, the three competitors had to short-cut through the grass in the NGK chicane, giving Handlos the decisive advantage on Scholze, who finished the race in second place.
Wolf Nathan and Anton Wossos took a gamble in the first stint by starting on slicks, putting the Dutch driver and his Greek partner in P2 at times. In the second stint, Wossos, who had switched to slicks at the pit-stop, and so was on fresher rubber, couldn´t match the pace of his opponents and finished the race in third place. Corvette drivers Toni Seiler and Remo Lips, who achieved a double victory for Corvette on Saturday, were unlucky in the second race and did not cross the finish line after colliding and skidding.
Handlos commented after his seventh win of the season: "Making the right tyre choice was a tough decision, but Alfred did a good job in the initial phases of the race. We were placed fourth for a while. The pit-stop was not perfect, which resulted unfortunately in our failure to make the Top Ten overall.
Dominic Jöst said: "Chaotic weather and gambling with tyres - fortunately, we made the right decision and went for wets. I wasn´t quite sure at first, but I knew that we´d made the right choice after the first lap. We moved up as far as P7, but unfortunately, lost time in the pit-stop."
Florian Scholze added: "We were in a bit of a panic on the grid as many of our opponents had switched to slicks and that made us uncertain about our decision to go out on wets. Our choice of tyre was correct in the final analysis. However, we had problems in the pit-stop and I then had to battle a bit with Herbert. We tried to go through the chicane along with the YACO Audi, but that didn´t work and the three of us ended up driving through the grass. That, sadly, lost me three positions."
