Daniel Keilwitz has managed to do in the ADAC GT Masters race at the Red Bull Ring what no other driver before him has managed to accomplish in the Super Sports Car League. The defending champion in the drivers´ standings repeated his double victory at the Red Bull Ring from last year in his Corvette Z06.R GT3 prepared by Callaway Competition along with Oliver Gavin. As was the case twelve months ago when Keilwitz won with Diego Alessi, the Corvette driver made an impresssive comeback in Austria after a mixed first half to the season. In the second half of the ADAC GT Masters season which begins at the Slovakia Ring in Slovakia on the weekend of August 8th-10th, Keilwitz will share the Corvette cockpit bearing start number #1 with Andreas Wirth.
The ADAC GT Masters summer break is coming to a close. How have you been spending your time since your double victory at the Red Bull Ring?
Daniel Keilwitz: "I took a week off, but we were also did quite a lot of testing. Plus, I´ve been racing in Hungary and in England and, of course, I watched football. So, I´ve had a very busy summer."
After a difficult season first half last year, the the double victory at the Red Bull Ring opened the door for you in the title fight. Things did not go too well in the first few races this year either, so are there parallels to be drawn?
"You cannot compare the 2014 season with last year, because we were simply down on performance in the first races of 2013. The performance is there this year, but we were just unlucky in the races prior to the Red Bull Ring. We had two no-fault accidents at Oschersleben and a hard time in the wet at Zandvoort, while at the Lausitzring, we lost a podium after a spin, unfortunately. A lot of silly things have cost us points up until now, but fortunately at the Red Bull Ring, we were back on track once again."
How do you rate your chances of becoming the first driver to successfully defend his title in the ADAC GT Masters?
"Everything is still possible, I think it is quite feasible that I can successfully defend the title. We must, however, secure some decent points in the remaining races and in every single race, for sure. This year, the leaders in the standings had considerably more points mid-season than was the case last year. Anyone who is serious about lifting the title cannot afford to score a big fat zero."
