Home advantage a factor in fastest lap? After a convincing performance in the first practice, Hari Proczyk and Gerhard Tweraser (Grasser Racing) were also strong in the second session at the Red Bull Ring. The two Austrians, who grew up just a stone's throw from the Red Bull Ring, are making only a guest appearance in this weekend's races but nonetheless put the Lamborghini Gallardo at the top of the timesheets in a varied field of supercars, with no fewer than six manufacturers jostling for the first six positions. At the end of the 60-minute session, the two local favourites were 0.251 seconds ahead of the Callaway Competition Corvette Z06.R driven by last year's winner and defending champion Daniel Keilwitz together with his new partner, Oliver Gavin.
The leading 16 were not only well matched and sporting an array of different badges on their grilles but were also separated by only the narrowest of margins - a single second. Along with the Grasser Lamborghini, there was another surprise package in the afternoon free practice session, as Tomas Enge and Albert von Thurn und Taxis in the mighty Chevrolet Camaro GT built by Reiter Engineering claimed fourth place behind the fastest of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3s crewed by HTP Motorsport's Maximilian Götz and Maximilian Buhk. Norbert Siedler and Robert Renauer (TONINO Team Herberth) were fifth in the fastest of the Porsche 911 GT3 Rs ahead of the PIXUM Team Schubert BMW Z4 GT3 driven by Jens Klingmann and Max Sandritter. Jaime Alguersuari and Nico Bastian in a ROWE RACING gullwing Mercedes finished the session in seventh place ahead of the RWT Racing Team Corvette driven by David Jahn and Sven Barth.
Current championship leaders Jaap van Lagen and Christian Engelhart in a GW IT Racing Team Schütz Motorsport Porsche 911 GT3 R and the duo of Luca Stolz and Heinz-Harald Frentzen in an HTP Motorsport Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 completed the Top Ten.
Free practice was briefly interrupted when the red flags came out after Nathan Morcom skidded off track in his Farnbacher Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R. Toni Seiler and Jeroen Bleekemolen, who had been fastest in the morning session, managed to complete only a few laps in the afternoon after the drive shaft broke on their Callaway Competition Corvette.
