PIXUM Team Schubert put both cars in the top two spots to mark their return from the summer break. The BMW Z4 GT3s prepared by the Oschersleben-based team secured the top two positions in the first practice session at the Slovakia Ring, as the sun shone from a clear blue sky with temperatures of 25 degrees. Claudia Hürtgen and Dominik Baumann took best time with a lead of 0.047 seconds on team-mates Max Sandritter and Jens Klingman. The Reiter Chevrolet Camaro driven by Albert von Thurn und Taxis and Tomas Enge achieved the third fastest lap ahead of the quickest Porsche 911 GT3 R with Philipp Frommenwiler/Sebastian Asch (Farnbacher Racing). Camaro and Porsche were second and third until just before the end of this first 60-minute practice session when the BMW of Sandritter/Klingman slotted into second place on the final lap.
ADAC GT Masters returnee, Andreas Wirth and Daniel Keilwitz (Callaway Competition) brought their Corvette GT3 Z06.R home in fifth place. However, practice was not without its problems for the Corvette drivers. The #1 Corvette spun into the gravel after just eight minutes, leading to a break in practice. A group of three Mercedes-Benz SLS AMGs led by Jan Seyffarth/Maro Engel (ROWE RACING) and followed by Luca Stolz/Mathias Lauda (HTP Motorsport) and Nico Bastian/Jaime Alguersuari (ROWE RACING) placed sixth, seventh and eighth respectively. Patrick Assenheimer/Diego Alessi (Callaway Competition) in the Corvette took ninth position from the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG of BKK MOBIL OIL Zakspeed of Luca Ludwig/Alon Day.
The pace in first practice was evidently much faster than last year as a result of the removal of the artificial chicane of tyres on the back straight. This Friday morning's best time set by Hürtgen/Baumann was just 1.2 seconds adrift of Frank Kechele's qualifying record from September 2013.
Fastest time in the separate Gentlemen practice session went to the leader in the Gentlemen standings, Herbert Handlos (TONINO Team Herberth), who is lining up in the 911 GT3 R with Robert Renauer for the first time at the Slovakia Ring.
