Remo Lips and ADAC Sports Foundation protégé Lennart Marioneck (Callaway Competition) can look back with satisfaction on a perfect weekend at the Slovakia Ring. After claiming their first win of the 2014 season in the Gentlemen class on Saturday, the Corvette pairing followed up on Sunday with a repeat performance. Herbert Handlos and Robert Renauer (TONINO Team Herberth) took the second podium spot ahead of fellow Porsche 911 GT3 R drivers Wolf Nathan and Antonios Wossos (GW IT Racing Team Schütz Motorsport).
Marioneck and Lips led the class from start to finish, though the race did not get off to the best of starts for the Corvette duo. "Immediately after the start, I got caught in a pincer movement between two Audis," said Marioneck later. "This resulted in a spin, which annoyed me greatly." Despite these difficulties, Marioneck retained the class lead for the yellow Corvette. And they were to get a bit more breathing space in the second half of the race when Handlos and Renauer made a costly mistake. The pit stop of the Porsche duo was one second shorter than the minimum time to be spent stationary.
Consequently, Handlos had to serve a one-second time penalty after taking over in the cockpit. This meant that Lips was able to steer his Corvette across the finish line for a second win in a row, and without any pressure from behind. "I am delighted with the win, but unfortunately we just missed out on the points in the overall classification by finishing eleventh," said the Swiss amateur. "Just for once, it would be nice to score a point in the drivers' championship."
In the Gentlemen stakes, P3 for Wolf Nathan and Anton Wossos means that the gap to second-placed Dominic Jöst has been reduced to a single point. Jöst and Florian Scholze in a TONINO Team Herberth Porsche 911 GT3 R were involved in a collision with the Corvette of Toni Seiler and Andreas Simonsen (Callaway Competition) on the first lap and had to make an emergency pit stop. Seiler and Simonsen were forced to retire from the race. With six races left in the 2014 campaign, Handlos continues to lead the class.
