Austrian Herbert Handlos had an almost perfect debut at the ADAC GT Masters in Oschersleben. In only his second ADAC GT Masters race, the 31-year-old driver secured victory for the Porsche 911 GT3 R (TONINO Team Herberth) in the Gentlemen class along with Alfred Renauer. Sunday´s podium for Gentlemen was made up solely of Porsche drivers with Dominic Jöst and Florian Scholze in second place, ensuring a double victory for TONINO Team Herberth, whilst Nathan Wolf and Anton Wossos (GW IT Racing Team // Schütz Motorsport) also finished on the podium in another 911.
Handlos secured a start-finish victory. His team-mate Renauer, who took the wheel for the first stint, went into P1 in the amateur class right after the start. Renauer then opened up a commanding lead, which Gentlemen driver Handlos maintained after the changeover in the second half of the race. Handlos/Renauer took victory from team-mates Jöst/Scholze, and Nathan/Wossos at the end of the 60-minute race.
Remo Lips (Callaway Competition) also had a good chance of a podium finish on Sunday, as his team-mate Lennart Marioneck was in second place in the Corvette Z06 R during the first half of the race. However, a stop-and-go penalty for too short a pit stop bumped him down into fourth position.
"My team-mate Alfred is a great racing driver and did a fantastic job of moving forward in the first stint. The team also did their bit really well. The Corvette behind me kept heaping on the pressure in the final phase, but I defended my position well to the very end," said a delighted Handlos.
His team-mate Jöst was also pleased with his first podium finish in the ADAC GT Masters: "Everything went great once I´d got past Florian. The rear tyres were degrading towards the end of the race, but I maintained position well and only had to let one other Porsche through. For us, it´s all about winning the Gentlemen classification and we´ve secured an excellent points´ haul this weekend."
The top two finishers from the first race, Toni Seiler (Callaway Competition) and Marc A Hayek (Blancpain Racing) were both unlucky on Sunday. Hayek´s team-mate Kox did indeed start on the front row, but the Lamborghini Gallardo was stopped after the first lap by a defective alternator. "The alternator failed on the warm-up lap," said Blancpain Racing team boss Hans Reiter. "We could still have posted a few laps on the battery, but that would have been pointless." And Seiler´s team-mate Jeroen Bleekemolen was involved in the collision at the start, so Seiler must postpone his 100th race start to the next round of the ADAC GT Masters in Zandvoort.
