Second win in Gentlemen class for Herbert Handlos: Gentlemen podium is a Porsche lockout

The ADAC GT Masters Gentlemen class was a high-voltage affair right up until the final lap on the Zandvoort circuit. On the third corner to last, Alfred Renauer in a Porsche 911 GT3 R overtook his TONINO Herberth team-mate Dominic Jöst to secure a second successive win of the campaign for Austrian co-driver Herbert Handlos. Antonios Wossos and local favourite Wolf Nathan (GW IT Racing Team // Schütz Motorsport) in yet another 911 GT3 R made it a successful day for Porsche with a podium lockout.

Florian Scholze and Dominic Jöst were dominant in the Gentlemen class from the first to the penultimate lap. In the first stint, Scholze kept the Porsche in the Top Ten of the overall standings ahead of Remo Lips (Callaway Competition Corvette) and Wossos. After Scholze handed over the cockpit to Jöst at the mandatory pit stop, the Porsche held on to the class lead right up to the final lap when Jöst came under pressure from team-mate Alfred Renauer. Jöst beat off repeated attacks from Renauer but finally succumbed on the last lap. Renauer went past and drove on to a class win while Jöst finished as runner-up one second adrift. Wossos and Nathan then took the third podium spot.

Herbert Handlos was delighted after his second class win in a row: "This was my first time at Zandvoort, and finding my rhythm in the wet was not easy. Flying over the hill in sixth gear and finding the right braking points sure takes a lot of guts. We struggled in practice and in qualifying, but the mechanics did a brilliant job and prepared the car really well for the race."

Dominic Jöst took a philosophical view of just missing out on the win: "We mastered conditions in our first rain-hit race brilliantly well. Florian achieved a great grid position for us in the qualifying. It was by no means easy in the race, though, because we've not had any opportunity to practise in the wet so far. Unfortunately, Alfred Renauer cruised past me in fine style on the final lap."

Florian Scholze is now hoping for another chance to notch up a maiden win in the Gentlemen class in Sunday's race: "I had a great starting position. My first race in the wet in a GT3 car was then quite tough, but I don't think I did too badly, handing the car over to Dominic in tenth place. Visibility was poor in the first half of the race, but it was fun and a terrific race altogether. It's a pity that we missed victory on the final lap, but we've got another chance tomorrow."

Toni Seiler finished fourth after his Callaway Competition Corvette went into a spin and developed gearbox problems. Remo Lips aquaplaned off the track and did not make it to the chequered flag.
