Seiler makes it a clean sweep for Corvette: Second win of the season for Toni Seiler in Gentlemen class

Corvette and Callaway Competition celebrated a perfect Saturday at the Red Bull Ring. In the first of the weekend's two races, victory not only went to the American sports car in the general classification but also in the Gentlemen category, with Toni Seiler ably assisted by Jeroen Bleekemolen picking up his second winner's trophy of the 2014 campaign ahead of team-mates Remo Lips and Lennart Marioneck. The victory for Seiler brings to an end the five-race winning streak of Porsche man Herbert Handlos (TONINO Team Herberth) who nonetheless continues to lead the standings. Third place went to Dominic Jöst who is sharing the cockpit of his TONINO Team Herberth Porsche 911 GT3 with Stefan Wackerbauer for the first time this weekend.

From the start to the penultimate lap, the race had looked to be a certain first win of the season for Remo Lips. The Swiss driver seized the class lead right at the start of the race and, following the mandatory pit stop, Lennart Marioneck looked to be heading for a comfortable win. But then on the last lap, Marioneck ran out of fuel and had to come off the accelerator. So it was that Bleekemolen managed to pull past on the final corner, after having worked his way up the field from a class P5. Marioneck was at least able to salvage the runner-up spot. Dominic Jöst finished third ahead of fellow Porsche drivers Wolf Nathan and Anton Wossos (GW IT Racing Team Schütz Motorsport). Handlos's luck ran out in his home race of all occasions: due to a problem with the fuel pressure which Alfred Renauer became aware of before the driver changeover, the class leader finished back in fifth.

Toni Seiler had mixed feelings about the stroke of bad luck that befell his team-mate: "I just feel sorry for Remo Lips losing out on the win on the final lap, because he drove a super race. At the start, I got stuck behind the McLaren and just couldn't get past. As soon as I overtook it, I was lapping a full second faster. As the race progressed, the brakes got slacker and the pedal was travelling much further, but I was able to adjust to that OK. Then, Jeroen drove a terrific stint."

Remo Lips has expressed his ambition to finish Race 2 on the very top podium step: "It's very disappointing to miss out on victory on the final lap, because I had been so pleased that we had finally got the better of Herbert Handlos. We were running in twelfth place, which would have been a super result, but we ended up crossing the line in 16th. Tomorrow, we're starting from P11, so I'm really hoping that we're going to get our first class win at last."
