ADAC GT Masters drivers had a successful weekend in the ADAC Zurich 24-hour race at the Nürburgring. Swedish driver Edward Sandström, who lines up for the kfzteile24 MS Racing Team in the Super Sports Car League took his maiden win in the 24-hour race, driving an Audi R8 LMS ultra fielded by Belgian outfit, WRT. His team-mates were six-time ADAC GT Masters race winner Christopher Mies, DTM driver Nico Müller and Laurens Vanthoor. This was Audi's third victory in four years at the Nürburgring and their first with the second generation R8 LMS which will also appear in the ADAC GT Masters next season after a year of development and testing.
The four drivers Sandström/Mies/Müller/Vanthoor made a little bit of history in this 43rd edition of the ADAC Zurich 24-hour race, taking the win from the BMW of former ADAC GT Masters driver Maxime Martin and his team-mates Lucas Luhr, Richard Westbrook and Markus Palttala with a lead of just 40 seconds, the smallest margin in the race to date.
"That was a tough race with plenty of good teams and tricky weather conditions," said Sandström. "My friends from Belgian Audi Club Team WRT worked really well, as did Audi Sport Customer Racing. The team's performance was just fine. The new car made a lot of work for everyone, but it all paid off. Driving for 24 hours without a hitch deserves the greatest respect."
Daniel Keilwitz was in a sports car that he was not familiar with at the Nürburgring but still showed his usual turn of speed. He finished the race in sixth place in a BMW Z4 GT3. Nicki Thiim and Christer Jöns, joined by Pierre Kaffer and double starter Vanthoor came home one position further down the field in another new Audi R8 LMS.
Bentley Team HTP's first 24-hour race with the Bentley Continental GT3 was a success. ADAC GT Masters driver Clemens Schmid placed eighth along with Marco Seefried, Christopher Brück and Harold Primat after a trouble-free race. However, ADAC GT Masters teams Zakspeed and Schubert Motorsport were not so lucky. Their vehicles failed to cross the finish line after crashing.
Patrick Assenheimer was delighted with his victory in class, winning the V4 production car class in a Mercedes-Benz C230.
