Asch and Ludwig brave the midday sun: Mercedes-Benz duo on top in second session

Sebastian Asch and Luca Ludwig are continuing their dream start to the season at the Lausitzring. The championship leaders in their Team Zakspeed Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 set the fastest time in the second free practice session. However, Asch left it to the last lap of FP2 to pip the pairing of Jordan Lee Pepper and Nicki Thiim in their C.Abt Racing Audi R8 LMS ultra by the narrowest of margins - a mere 0.069 seconds. With the thermometer showing 33.5°C, Asch was around 0.7 seconds faster than the best time set by the BMW in the first of the two sessions.

After setting the pace in the morning, the two BMW Z4 GT3s entered by BMW Sports Trophy Team Schubert finished the afternoon session in reverse order, with Claudia Hürtgen and Uwe Alzen now in third ahead of Dominik Baumann and Jens Klingmann in fourth. Florian Stoll and Marc Basseng in a kfzteile24 MS Racing Audi R8 LMS ultra were a speedy fifth in the scorching sun ahead of the faster of the two Bentley Continentals driven by Luca Stolz and Jeroen Bleekemolen (Team Bentley HTP). In seventh place was the quickest of the Corvette GT3 Z06.Rs driven by Remo Lips and Sven Barth (RWT Racing Team).

The Top Ten was completed by the Audi R8 LMS ultra of Stefan Wackerbauer and Kelvin van der Linde (C.Abt Racing), the Porsche 911 GT3 R of Klaus Bachler and Martin Ragginger (GW IT Racing Team Schütz Motorsport) and the second of the kfzteile24 MS RACING Audi R8 LMS ultras driven by Daniel Dobitsch and Edward Sandström.

Missing out on FP2 were Andreas Wirth and Daniel Keilwitz, whose Corvette GT3 Z06.R (Callaway Competition) was undergoing a replacement of its V8 engine, and the C.Abt Racing pairing of Andreas Weishaupt and Christer Jöns, whose Audi R8 LMS ultra developed an engine problem.

The weekend finished early for Marc Gassner and Florian Strauss of MRS GT Racing when their Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 caught fire during the second session. Although the blaze was quickly extinguished, the car was in no fit state to continue its participation in this event.
