ADAC GT Masters·1.3.2015

C.Abt Racing driver squad now complete: Andreas Weishaupt fills final vacancy at C.Abt Racing

The C.Abt Racing driver line-up for the 2015 ADAC GT Masters is now in place. The last available cockpit in the three Audi R8 LMS ultras has gone to Andreas Weishaupt. The businessman from Swabia (SW Germany) will be partnering Christer Jöns. Christian Abt had already announced in January that defending champion Kelvin van der Linde would be sharing car number 1 with Stefan Wackerbauer. Meanwhile, Nicki Thiim´s campaign for points and placings will be a joint effort with rookie Jordan Lee Pepper from South Africa.

Weishaupt is new to the ADAC GT Masters, although his career in motorsport dates back five years. "It started out with me buying my first sports car," recalls the 42 year old. "I then took it out for a track test and pushed it to the limit. It was a fantastic feeling that I wanted to experience more of." His first competitive season was the 2011 Porsche Sports Cup in which he recorded several class wins and finished third overall. This led on to outings in the VLN endurance series and the ADAC Zurich 24-hour race on the Nürburgring North Loop in which he notched up a class win. "Although Andreas is a latecomer to the sport, his career has developed by leaps and bounds," says Christian Abt.

The team boss has thus taken on an additional challenge to the defence of the two titles, namely to transform a ‘Gentleman´ (i.e. amateur) driver into a professional racer: "I´m aiming to prove that you can win with other than talented youngsters. We intend to show that Andreas Weishaupt is good enough to be one of the front runners." To this end, he will be receiving intensive coaching from team principal and former DTM star Christian Abt. Targeted practice, data analysis and test runs are all part of the plan. As with last year´s champion van der Linde, Weishaupt is expected to study hard under the tutelage of Christian Abt. He will also have the support of Christer Jöns who is 15 years his junior.

"Christer is a great team-mate," says an appreciative Weishaupt. "I´ve heard a lot about him. He is very talented and highly successful. I will certainly be able to learn a thing or two from him. It´s also a great honour to be given the chance to drive for such a successful team as C.Abt Racing. I will be doing my best to be a quick learner."

Ahead of the season opener at the etropolis Motorsport Arena Oschersleben on the weekend of 24th - 26th April and also the official preliminary tests on 8th/9th April at the same venue, C.Abt Racing will be making their final preparations on the Ascari race track in Spain.
