Gentlemen debut win for BMW driver Knoll: Second place gives Remo Lips lead in Gentlemen standings

BMW took both victory overall at the Lausitzring and the win in the Gentlemen class. Jakub Knoll, now back in the Super Sports Cars League after a one-race break, secured his maiden win in the Gentlemen class in the BMW Z4 GT3 (Senkyr Motorsport), supported by Lennart Marioneck. The BMW pair won through on the final lap in a thrilling battle with Corvette duo Remo Lips/Sven Barth (RWT Racing Team). Second place put Lips in the lead in the Gentlemen standings. Andreas Weishaupt booked third place in the Audi R8 LMS ultra (C Abt Racing).

Everything pointed to victory for Corvette driver Remo Lips in the hottest race ever in the history of the ADAC GT Masters. Lips took over the lead after the start, as Knoll and Weishaupt battled for second place behind him. While the Corvette was still in the lead after Lips handed the car over to Barth, the BMW in second place was now no longer under any pressure from behind, because Weishaupt's team-mate Jöns had to serve a drive-through penalty for infringing the rules during a pit stop.

Marioneck in second place increased the pressure on Barth, who was in the lead during the closing stages and overtook the Corvette on the final lap to secure victory. Second place enabled Lips to take the lead in the Gentlemen standings from Florian Scholze and Dominic Jöst, who elected not to line up in the Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 (MRS GT-Racing) on Saturday, hoping to enter the fray again on Sunday. The second Nissan GT-R with Marc Gassner/Florian Strauss was unable to race after suffering fire damage in free practice on Friday.

"With all the confusion and the interruption on the first lap, I didn't spend all that long in the car, so from that aspect, it wasn't all that tiring," said Knoll about the race. "I had no problems in the initial phase, but my pace was not very good. After that, Lenny was great and he secured the victory for us."

New leader in the standings Lips now hopes to post his third win of the season after taking second place on Saturday. "The opening phase of the race went well for us, but at the restart, I was unable to get the engine going again and had to line up in last place. We lost a lot of time at the pit stop, and unfortunately, we missed out on the class victory on the final lap. But tomorrow we have a new opportunity, and then we will win."

For Weishaupt, who secured his maiden win in class at Spa last time out, third place on Saturday was a matter of practising damage limitation after a race that was not without its problems. "I'm not satisfied; various things were less than optimum. It started yesterday when we had to replace the engine. In the race, I had bad luck again when I skidded on an oil patch. Then unfortunately, we had an annoying drive-through penalty; we need to see exactly what happened there. It was extremely hot, and the car suffered badly under these conditions; the warning lights kept flashing. The conditions this weekend are a challenge for everyone."
