Andreas Weishaupt posted his maiden victory in the Gentlemen rankings in his sixth ADAC GT Masters race. Partnered by Christer Jöns, the German in the Audi R8 LMS ultra produced a perfect start-finish victory in adverse conditions. Remo Lips, class winner on Saturday, came home second in the Corvette GT3 Z06.R ahead of championship leaders Dominic Jöst and Florian Scholze in the Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3.
The white Audi R8 bearing #3 driven by Jöns headed the standings in the class from the first lap, followed by Lips and Nissan pair Jöst/Scholze. The order remained unchanged to the end of the race. On the penultimate lap of the race, Weishaupt was well placed overall in P6. There was another scary moment, though, before he was able to drive the Audi R8 over the finish line. Weishaupt lost three positions after contact with a BMW but secured the class win at the finish line.
Weishaupt: "I got hit quite badly by a BMW on the last lap, and we need to look into that. It cost me three places, but the thing that matters most to me is the Gentlemen competition, and that went very well. I was very pleased with my lap times in the rain. I even managed to keep up with some of the top drivers."
Jöst was pleased that the Nissan ran without any problems in the second race after glitches in practice. "My compliments to the team. The crew worked solidly for 48 hours after we hit problems and changed the wiring loom twice on our Nissan. The GT-R ran without a hitch today. The weather was a disaster. You almost had to feel your way around the track. These laps today were our first in the wet in the Nissan, so the result was good."
Scholze also found the rain challenging: "It was our first time out today with the Nissan in the wet. On the first few laps, it was more like a test session in which you had to find the racing line. I would've liked to have a couple of more laps, but the race ended. All in all, the weekend was not what we expected. Third place goes some way towards compensating."
Samuel Sladecka in the BMW Z4 GT3 finished fourth in front of the Porsche 911 GT3 R with René Bourdeaux. Marc Gassner could not race due to a technical problem on the Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3.
