Sebastian Asch: We are in the best position: ADAC GT Masters title within reach for Asch

The first of two match points for Sebastian Asch and Luca Ludwig comes in Race 1 of the ADAC GT Masters weekend at the Hockenheimring. Providing Asch and Ludwig do not lose more than five points to their closest pursuers Dominik Baumann (BMW) and Klaus Bachler (Porsche) in this first race on Saturday, the title will be in the bag. Asch gave us this short interview ahead of the grand finale.

You arrive at the Hockenheimring 31 points clear of the opposition. How do you feel about that?

Sebastian Asch: "A lot of people have come up to me and said that nothing else can happen and that we are already as good as champions. But that's simply not true. If our rivals win a race and we don't pick up any points, that will throw everything wide open again. Of course, we are going into the last two races highly motivated and firmly believe in our chance, but I have already experienced so many ups and downs in my racing career, and I only feel happy when there really is a reason for it."

Despite your caginess, a lead of this magnitude surely means that you start the weekend in a calmer frame of mind?

"Of the three championship contenders, we are certainly in the best position. We arrive at the track leading the table, and it's the others who have to do the arithmetic. We'll be doing our job this weekend, as we have done all season. If it's enough at the end, all well and good. If it goes wrong, we won't be blaming ourselves, because we have always done our best."

How do you rate the chances of your opponents at the Hockenheimring?

"It's very difficult to say anything about that until we've got out on the track. In my Masters-winning season of 2012, I won at Hockenheim, and the track should suit our SLS AMG GT3. But the same goes for the Porsche and the BMW. They will also be strong there. Over the past three weekends, it's been difficult to identify a clear favourite, because actually all the cars were capable of qualifying on the front row. For us, however, the last event at Zandvoort was enormously important. We showed with our victory in Race 1 that we were back in contention. We intend to build on that at Hockenheim."
