The Audi R8 LMS has been a permanent fixture in the Super Sports Car League since 2009 – and a successful one at that. The model from Ingolstadt is one of the most successful in the series with two drivers´, three team titles and 26 race wins to its name. Audi introduced the second generation R8 in 2015. This year, 2016, marks its first full season under race conditions. Six teams field a total of ten of the new Audi R8 LMS cars in the ADAC GT Masters.
The two Audi drivers, Christopher Mies and Connor De Phillippi, from Team Montaplast by Land-Motorsport lead the drivers´ standings after three of seven race weekends. The outfit led by team principal Wolfgang Land is preparing for the future and has ordered another R8 LMS the 200th to come off the line. Audi have so far delivered 136 models of the first generation of the car and 64 of its successor to customers worldwide.
"We are proud to have reached the magic figure of 200 cars," said Stephan Winkelmann, Managing Director of quattro GmbH, the company which develops and builds the racing cars. "With more than ten providers of vehicles, including many premium sports car brands, the GT3 market in many countries is a very hard-fought sector. Demand shows that our product and services are both customer-oriented and highly competitive."
Chris Reinke, Head of Audi Sport Customer Racing, told us: "Many teams have decided on the Audi R8 LMS since the new model was introduced last year, and there is no let-up to the number of enquiries from many parts of the world. Our teams and drivers worldwide are now in their first full season with the new racing car, battling for wins and championship titles."
The Audi R8 LMS chassis comes from the same Böllinger Höfe line as the Audi R8 production model. The two sports cars are closely related. The racing car uses 50 percent of the parts and components found in the production model, including the V10 FSI engine which is virtually standard.
