ADAC GT Masters: Comments after free practice: What the drivers had to say at the Red Bull Ring

Sebastian Asch (AMG Team Zakspeed, Mercedes-AMG GT3): "Essentially, I don't rate our chances at the Red Bull Ring very highly. The Top Four or Top Five is going to be really difficult. The Top Ten should be possible. We're lacking speed in the first sector on the long uphill straight. But we'll take it as it comes. We need to do our homework, and then it should all work out."

Sven Barth (RWT Racing, Corvette Z.06 GT3): "We've had to completely rebuild our car in the run-up to the Red Bull Ring, so we've been using the free practice sessions to see if everything works properly - and it does. We are really satisfied. Qualifying in the Top 15 would suit us fine."

António Félix da Costa (Schubert Motorsport, BMW M6 GT3): "Free practice went quite well. There are still a few cars - or it may be the drivers - that are faster than us. For our car, there are some good sections and some bad ones on the Red Bull Ring, but it's probably the same for teams with cars of other brands. It's apparent, though, that this track suits the BMW better than others. My team-mate Jesse (Krohn) is very good and quite experienced for such a young guy. I'm learning a lot from him. Although I'm new to the ADAC GT Masters, I already know the Red Bull Ring from the DTM. This year, I narrowly missed out on pole position. It would be nice if I could make up for that now."

Philip Geipel (YACO Racing, Audi R8 LMS): "We used Thursday's test sessions at the Red Bull Ring to get me and my new team-mate Marc (Basseng) accustomed to each other. That went well. In the free practice sessions, we performed OK. The field is once again very tight. We'll try to finish in the points, as we did last year. My compliments, by the way, to the people who have resurfaced the Red Bull Ring. They've taken out most of the bumps, and it's a lot of fun to drive here."

Jules Gounon (Callaway Competition, Corvette C7 GT3-R): "This is yet another track that I as a newcomer am unfamiliar with. But I'm quickly getting used to it. I like it a lot. The atmosphere and the scenery are amazing. The practice sessions weren't bad for us. Let's see what happens in qualifying. In the first race, we have to carry 30 kilos of success ballast. In the circumstances, we'll be happy with a Top Ten result. In the second race, we'll be on full attack, come what may."

Marco Holzer (Bentley Team ABT, Bentley Continental GT3): "Practice went well, the car runs superbly, and the Red Bull Ring suits us fine. Setting the best times is obviously very nice, but you don't score any points for that. It all depends on qualifying. We have to make sure we get the setup as good as we have for practice. Then we'll have to wait and see what the weather brings. If it remains as warm as this, we'll need to make sure that the tyres don't wear out too fast."

Christer Jöns (Bentley Team ABT, Bentley Continental GT3): "We've done extensive preparation for the Red Bull Ring weekend, including a two-day test. That helped us a lot. It enabled us to get to know the car even better and to try out various things. In between now and qualifying, we still have a little fine-tuning to do. It's looking good, but you always have to treat free practice results with caution."

Connor De Phillippi (Montaplast by Land-Motorsport, Audi R8 LMS): "Our car feels good. At the moment, we are very confident about our strength over a full race distance. In qualifying, though, we have to see what we can manage. We would be quite happy with a place in the Top Eight. We could then compensate for that with our race pace, which we've done so many times in the past. Whether we'll still be topping the table after the weekend isn't entirely up to us. We just want to give it the best we've got."

Nicolaj Rogivue (AMG Team Zakspeed, AMG-Mercedes GT3): "That was a real ding-dong at the end of the second free practice. First Marco Holzer was ahead, then me, and finally it was him again. At any rate, we are very pleased with our two top places in free practice. We haven't got off to such a good start on any other race weekend so far this season. At the moment, we're feeling very confident."

Markus Winkelhock (Phoenix Racing, Audi R8 LMS): "The recently resurfaced track has quite good grip. Some of the bumps that were there last year have now been removed. For our team, it's quite difficult here. The Red Bull Ring has never been an Audi track. We lack the necessary speed on the straights. For example, the Bentleys are taking five or six tenths of a second off us there. In any case, we're aiming to score points. There is always so much that can happen in a race."
