The ADAC GT Masters finale was packed full of drama. In the second race of the ADAC GT Masters season finale at Hockenheim, Jules Gounon was on course to take the title when he lost control of his Corvette C7 GT3-R and went into the tyre wall. The Frenchman was lucky and got off lightly in the end. "I recovered very quickly - even the doctor was surprised. I was only in hospital for a few days and was then able to go home. Now I want to get back in a racing car as soon as I can," said Gounon.
He doesn't remember much about the impact itself: "The Lamborghini in front of me eased off the accelerator briefly because of a problem. I had to take evasive action, and then it happened. I went into a skid. My left leg hurt after the smash. Fortunately, it wasn't broken, as was suspected, but just badly bruised. Still, this was by far and away the worst crash of my career so far."
Before the crash, Gounon still had a good chance of winning the ADAC GT Masters title together with his team colleague at Callaway Competition, Daniel Keilwitz. Fourth place in the overall virtual standings put them level with the leaders in the standings Christopher Mies and Connor De Phillippi, but Gounon did not know at the time that things were looking so good: "I was not told on the radio that the Audi of Mies and De Phillippi had just gone off track a short time before and were out of the points. As far as I knew, they were at least second, which is why I took a risk. Otherwise, I would have taken my time, overtaking the Lamborghini. It's obviously extremely unfortunate that the title was decided in this way. I feel really sorry, especially for the team, who gave it their all during the whole season."
He is still young and could be a title contender at some time in the future. Perhaps in 2017? Gounon: "It was a fantastic season, even though we ultimately only finished third overall. I was new to the series and didn't know any of the circuits apart from the Nürburgring. Almost nobody knew me either. That's changed during the season. Both Callaway Competition in particular and the ADAC GT Masters have become like family to me. I was very touched by the number of drivers from other teams who sent me get-well-soon cards. I would love to be back in the fray with Callaway Competition again next year."
