Robert Renauer wins 2016 Porsche Cup: Porsche trophy for privateers dates back to 1970

At Night of Champions in Weissach, a gala event organised by Porsche Motorsport, Germany's Robert Renauer was handed the trophy for winning this year's Porsche Cup by Dr Wolfgang Porsche, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Porsche AG. This marked a major achievement, as the honour is conferred annually on the world's most successful racing driver in a non-works Porsche.

Renauer and co-driver Martin Ragginger contested the 2016 ADAC GT Masters in a new Porsche 911 GT3-R prepared by Herberth Motorsport. His two victories and fifth-place finish in the series earned most of the points that secured him the Porsche Cup. With a final tally of 7,355 points, Renauer beat second-placed Christian Ried. In addition to the fame and honour that goes with the award, he was also handed the keys to a Porsche 911 worth 120,000 euros.

The Porsche Cup has been running since 1970. The list of previous winners includes such famous names as Klaus Ludwig, Bernd Schneider and Stéphane Ortelli. Renauer joins Martin Ragginger (2013) and Jaap van Lagen (2014) to become the third ADAC GT Masters driver to pick up the title in the past four years.
