ADAC GT Masters·6.5.2017

Interview with ADAC GT Masters driver Rahel Frey: You can't afford to make any mistakes

What are your goals after having had such a good season in 2016 and securing a win and P9 overall this year?

"It would be great if we could build on our success from last year, but we know that's not going to be easy, because the competition is even tougher this season. Still, that's what makes the ADAC GT Masters so attractive at the end of the day. It would be great if we could finish in the Top Ten again at the end of the year. The main goal is to be more consistent, because we suffered five retirements in 2016."

You're sharing YACO Racing's Audi R8 LMS with Philipp Geipel for the fourth year. What makes him and the team so good?

"We know each other extremely well by now. Philipp is very professional. He's not been able to post as many test kilometres as other drivers, because he works at a car dealer's during the week, but he soon gets down to business once he's at the racetrack. The fact that we get on really well other obviously makes working together very easy. The whole outfit is like a big family. We support each other, which allows us to deal with setbacks. The whole team put their heart and soul into it, and many team members even sacrifice their days off or their holidays even to help out at the races."

What will be the highlight of the season for you?

"The races at the Sachsenring, for sure, because the team will be racing on home turf that weekend, which always makes you feel really motivated, as many fans and friends of YACO Racing will be there. From a track point of view, I also like Zandvoort. Hockenheim is a bit like a home race for me personally, because it always attracts plenty of Swiss spectators. We shouldn't forget the next race weekend at the Lausitzring either where we'll be lining up with the DTM."

Unlike in previous years, you will be contesting a full season in the ADAC GT Masters this year.

"Yes, that's right! In recent years, I've always had to miss one or two races, since I've also contested the Audi R8 LMS Cup in Asia. There would have been one or two clashes of dates again this year, but we decided that it's pointless to miss more races. This way, I can now focus fully on the ADAC GT Masters at YACO Racing."

What do you find most appealing about racing in the Super Sports Car League?

"It has a really impressive field of entrants. You always have to give it 100%, and you just cannot afford to make any mistakes, otherwise you'll end up trailing behind this highly competitive field. Competing in the ADAC GT Masters is great fun, because it really puts demands on you as a driver."
