Jeffrey Schmidt wins Junior standings on Sunday : Audi driver finishes second overall at Zandvoort

The Swiss driver even led the rain-hit race at Zandvoort for eleven laps in his Audi R8 LMS, but with three laps to go to the finish line, his Montaplast by Land Motorsport team-mate, Connor De Phillippi, overtook him, consigning him to second place which is where he finished. By finishing second overall, he took his maiden podium in the ADAC GT Masters and his second victory in the Junior rankings for drivers under 25 after his success in the season opener at Oschersleben.

Schmidt: “I've got mixed feelings about the race. We had a great pit stop strategy that gave us the lead. Also, I really love driving in the rain. It's especially good fun here at Zandvoort. Two of my restarts were good, but I was a bit too careful with the last one, because I thought that there would be more water on the track, which is when Connor slipped past. Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to retake P1 after that.”

Saturday's winner, Jules Gounon, was second-best junior this time in his Callaway Corvette. It again looked like he was heading for the podium in the second race after taking overall victory the previous day, but he only managed P6 overall after getting a drive-through penalty for exceeding the speed limit in the pit lane. Nevertheless, Gounon continues to lead both the overall and junior standings. Finishing for the first time on the podium for juniors in the rain at Zandvoort, BMW junior Dennis Marschall came home in third place in the Audi R8 LMS prepared by Aust Motorsport and was seventh overall.

Title defender Remo Lips took his first victory of the year in the Trophy rankings for amateur drivers. With this success, the Nissan driver from MRS GT-Racing, extended his lead in this category, aided for the first time by his German team-mate, Marc Gassner.
