ADAC GT Masters·3.7.2017

Late starter with chance of taking title : Impressive newcomer: Ezequiel Perez Companc

The 22-year-old could hardly believe it when in mid-May he crossed the finish line in Sunday's race at the Lausitzring in P1 in the Lamborghini Huracán GT3 prepared by GRT Grasser Racing. "It was incredible," said Perez Companc. "My team-mate Mirko Bortolotti and I finished third on the podium on Saturday, and then we secured the win the very next day. I would never have thought it possible to win in only my second race weekend in the ADAC GT Masters, particularly as this is my first season in the series with the Lamborghini and with Grasser."

Unlike most of the young drivers in the Super Sports Car League, Perez Companc is a bit of a late starter in motor racing, having never raced in karting or in formula motor racing despite the fact that motor sport plays an important role in his family. "We've all got petrol for blood. My uncle Luis drove in the World Rally Championship and later in the Endurance World Championship. My father also competed in rallies both as driver and co-driver. However, I didn't contest my first race in the Ferrari Challenge Europe until I was 18." He won the Ferrari Pro-Am title in 2014 in his first full season. He then entered GT3 sport where he drove a Ferrari 458 GT3 in 2015 and 2016 before moving to the ADAC GT Masters in 2017.

"I originally intended to line up in a different racing series this year, but my team boss, Gottfried Grasser suggested that I compete in the ADAC GT Masters," said the Argentinian. "I'm very pleased with how things have turned out. I realised immediately in the first race that the ADAC GT Masters is a very professional racing series and extremely well organised. And, it's highly competitive. There are plenty of potential candidates for the win in every race. It requires a huge effort just to get on the podium."

Born in Buenos Aires, Perez Companc moved to Barcelona a few years ago in order to focus more on motor sport, "It makes life much easier, as I don't have to commute between South America and Europe." He lives near the campus in the metropolis on the Med. "I'm studying marketing, but motor racing takes priority," he says. "But I try to juggle them both."

Currently fifth in the championship standings, he has a big ambition for this season: "I think we are among the title contenders. The goal is to secure enough points to be able to travel to the season finale in Hockenheim with a chance of lifting the title. My team are doing a fantastic job, and I have a great team-mate in Mirko Bortolotti. He's one of the fastest GT3 drivers around, and I can learn a lot from him."
