Deliveries of the 720S GT3 to customers will commence in 2019. McLaren intend to undertake an intensive development programme next year. The racing car will be built in a new factory in Woking at the headquarters of the British company. This will be the third GT3 sports car from McLaren following the introduction of the MP4-12C GT3 and the 650S GT3 which evolved from it. "The 720S GT3 will be a stunning addition to our product family," said McLaren Automotive CEO Mike Flewitt.

The GT3 version will be based on the road-going model, the 720S, which was launched at the Geneva Motor Show this year and features the 'Monocage II' carbon fibre monocoque and a newly developed 4-litre V8 engine with twin turbochargers. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a six-speed sequential close-ratio gearbox. The 720S GT3's aerodynamically optimised bodywork will include a sophisticated aero package suspension, featuring well-proven adjustable dampers with coil-over springs front and rear. McLaren works driver Rob Bell, who has been with McLaren for many years, will carry out the development work.

So far, the McLaren has only contested two seasons in the ADAC GT Masters, in 2012 and 2014, achieving pole position with Philipp Eng at Spielberg in its debut year.
